    Agree.

But the real secret True Jeep Way is that the hook twist is designed for the open position.

If you always wondered why your chains are too long, it's because they are meant to be hooked like this.

Hey Donny, Yep it sure is!

I would guess that since you're a long-time Tuxaholic, you may already have seen the photos of that '66 with less than 3k miles on the clock, but here's the link:

I have misplaced my chains. I used to run my Jeep out in the Everglades. The extended chain would extend the tailgate to a flat position. I would pull out the passenger seat, drop the tailgate, and sleep with my feet out the back. It was much better than laying down in the mud. Now I just have a padlock on the tailgate, so no one can steal it.

    PeteL,

Thanks for that picture showing the correct way to hook the tailgate in the open position. I kept twisting my chains to shorten them up to get the tailgate to be level in the open position!

    Another zombie thread. Zoinks! [IMG]
But good info is good info no matter how stale it is.

I was debating on the merits of bolting the tailgate shut and not using it as intended until I read your statement.
More room, a cargo space extender if carrying large loads, and when camping a place to put your Coleman stove.

Thanks for passing on that knowledge! I was wondering why my tailgate was not level when I opened it. Now I know!

When I picked up my CJ it had the tailgate bolted. I set it up with Chevy Silverado cables . They don't rattle are set up for a level tailgate and clip off easily when removing the tailgate.

OK, I think this pic works.

    Jeep Tailgate.png [IMG]

My very original '56 jeep's tailgate chain wants to be hooked like this for a level tailgate. Plus, this method tucks the pointy end of the hook totally out of the way, also becoming level with the tailgate. Easier to hook too. (I thought everyone did it this way!!) .... An old bicycle inner tube cut to fit the chain, keeps it quiet.
