Did the windshield to cowl seal tonight. I got the seal Old Pappy found on e-bay in this thread: Windshield To Cowl Rubber Seal ?

Some PO put a bunch of foam house-type weather stripping on the cowl in an attemp to seal things:

Pulled the old weather strip off. Luckily, I'm blessed with a non-rust windshield frame and all the screws came out with no issues:

Cleaning off the dirt that had caked in behind the old seal:

Pealing off the added foam junk:

Sadly, the foam left behind a bunch of glue. Thanks PO! Both brake cleaner and acetone are attacking the paint so I stopped cleaning it for the moment. I'll try some Goof-Off tomorrow. Does anyone else have any idea what to use?:

Working the new seal over the flange on the windshield:

Supervisor inspecting the work quality. I'm not sure he was happy with it but I bribed him with a scratch under the collar:

New seal screwed into place. It's a little wavy, so I have the windshield clamped back in the upright position to flatten things out:

    Much better!:

Thanks, if the Goof-off doesn't work, I'll hunt that down. There is an automotive paint shop in town that should have it.

If your really worried about the paint. Leave the adhesive alone, let dust build on it and dry it out. At that point it will likely rub off with your finger.

And dust isn't a problem here.

Wd40 works great on residue, way better than goof off IMO!

I think that's the most rust-free windshield I've ever seen by the way

Glue removal report using all the methods I have on hand:
    • Goof-Off - Attacks the paint and little effect on the glue
    • WD-40 - No affect on paint and no affect on the glue
    • Mineral Spirits - Mildly attacks the paint with little effect on the glue
    • Rubbing with a finger - Does not attack paint and does remove the glue but very slowly
    • Heating with heat gun and rubbing with finger - Works a little better but not enough to matter
Give all that, I'm guessing the rubbing wheel I ordered from Amazon has a good chance of working well.

How about alcohol? The rubbing kind, not the drinking kind.

As noted before, I want to get a Hitch on at leas one of the Jeeps to haul the Bantam trailer around.

    My main criteria:
    • A receiver hitch
    • To not greatly reduce the daparture angle
    • It has to clear the spare tire rack
    • Center of ball height needs to be about 19" for the trailer to sit level
Those criteria are a lot harder to achieve on the '71 with the rear tank, so the '69 gets the hitch.

This is about where I want it. Almost flush with the bumper and about 1.5" below it:
Note: I have a dropped hitch coming that will put the ball at this height with the hitch in the receiver. I'm mimicking it here by clamping the hitch to the bottom of the receiver.

To have any sort of support with the receiver in that location I need to mount the hitch to the back side of the pintle mount. It was time for some Cardboard Aided Design again.

After a bunch of cutting and fitting this is the result:

Here it is out of the Jeep. It gets it's longitudinal support from the large vertical paltes and it's lateral support from the angle irons attached to the sides. i think it will work fine and it's easy to unbolt. Next is reproducing it in steel:

Didn't accomplish much tonight because I got a late start and spent most of the time changing the taillights on the '71. 71 Wheeling Rig

I did however get the main chunks of angle iron cut to length and marked up for trimming:

Got the main pieces of metal cut out tonight.

Drilling holes for nice radii at the corners of the cuts:

Attempting to cut straight and square lines with a cutodd wheel in the angle grinder:

I did a terribel job and the cuts weren't particularly straight. I finished the cuts I could with the chop saw and then cleaned things up with the angle grinder and die grinder, After 30 minutes of that, both pieces were reasonable symmetric and fit the Jeep.

Here's the basic structure of the receiver in metal. I need to clean off the rust/scale, round off the edges and weld it together tomorrow night:

And with the hitch in it:

It was so hot today the garage didn't get below 90 degrees until 9PM. So I got a late start but I made some progress.

Deburred, cleaned, and degreased all the parts and started by welding the 2"x3" angle to the 2" flat stock. I really needed 2"x5" angle, but I'm just making this from scrap I have laying around:

I'm showing the best looking weld in that picture. I was having a really hard time seeing to weld. With the hood turned to the lowest safe setting for MIG, I could see the puddle fine but couldn't see where I was going. It helped a little to shine a bright LED work light on the weld but I need to replace the plastic protector in my hood. It's got so much uncleanable damage it glares when you're welding and you can't see anything that isn't the puddle itseld. New protectors ordered but I had to power through it tonight:

After my side plates were welded together, I ground the weld where it overlaps the receiver tube and started clamping things together. I clamped the mounting surfaces to a piece of 3/8" plate to make sure they stay co-planar:

Then I squared up the receiver tube by tapping it with a hammer:

    Tack welded in place:

Letting it cool off so I can test fit it to the Jeep before final welding:

Test fitting. I like how it's turning out:

You can see it doesn't hurt the departure angle much:

And here's how it fits to the back of the pintle mount area:

That's it for tonight. Hoping to get the final welds on these pieces tomorrow night and add some additional bracing.

    The receiver all welded in:

More angle iron cut for the side braces:

Using the stepped drill to add holes for safety chains:

Side braces welded on along with an additional brace on the back. Now it's cooling:

I feel pretty good about it. It's much stronger than the Jeep frame it's bolting to.

Next is drilling the mounting holes, cleaning, and painting.

Clamped it on the Jeep and marked the holes. Then drilled them out to 9/16" in three steps on the drill press:

Note how the upper hole aren't centered on the flats. The flats are fit to the inside of the chassis V-brace and the holes from the factory are that far off-center.

After that it was more deburring/cleaning and a full test fit before painting. Sadly I don't have 6 identical 1/2" bolts. Unless I get to the hardware store before bolting it on, it will have two gold bolts and four silver bolts:

With the hitch and the spare in place....and Emmett "patiently" waiting for his ball:

It's good enough for me so the first coat of paint is drying. I'll flip it over in the morning and paint the back side so I can permanently install it tomorrow night:
