So as a little background, my wife got me going on estate sale hunting! Quite an exciting hobby! So to do so with any amount of success, if you want any specific item, you should be one of the 1st people in line! Especially now they limit the amount of people through the door! Anyway I was able to purchase this at an estate sale in southern calif. It is a Sheldon 11 inch lathe with just about every accessory available. It was a government issue for WW2 so I have learned. I have since joined a Sheldon group to learn more about acquisition.

Actually the transport was the easy part! Removing it from the shop behind the garage with a approximate 6 inch drop and regular door opening, made it real interesting! But with some heavy duty moving carts and a cherry picker, loaded on a flatbed. And hey no big deal! I have to give a shout out to my brother who without his help I definitely would've had to pay a company to haul it!

Now the real problem! Learning how to use it! Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated on how to make the best use of this vintage steel!

The tooling make this a nice lathe. Looks pretty comprehensive. That looks like a nice quick-change tool holder too. Aloris? How much wear in the ways?

Look at the triangular base at the headstock end.. Was this thing on a boat?

Anyway, my clausing lathe is a bit newer than yours, but essentially the same without the required gear change thing. I have pretty much all the same tooling as you and use mostly NONE of it. All the old tool post stuff has never been used since I also have an ALA1 quick change tool post. I pretty much never turn stuff between centers, so the lathe dogs dont get used. They do have their place though for sure.

What I do use all the time is the 4 jaw independent chuck and my 5C collets. I have a 3 jaw scrolling chuck, but its worn out and I can't keep any good tolerances with it, so its junk. I indicate in all my work with the big 4 Jaw. I need a smaller 4 jaw.

My lathe came with a royal collet closer, but that too was worn out and was not easily repairable, so I made a draw bar from the parts. It wasn't perfectly accurate, but acceptable. I them bought a cheap Chinese collet chuck and machined the L00 threaded adapter to fit... Even with my Chinese Interstate collets I am able to get to .0005 concentricity or tot he limits of my measuring capability.

I almost never use HSS tool bits, but they work better on things like brass. You just need to learn how to grind them. I pretty much only used carbide inserts now, but to really utilize them correctly, you need to turn your lathe speed to maximum. On old lathes its not real fun... Even at lower speeds carbide inserts get the job done.

Get this thing set up on a concrete level surface and preferably bolt it down into it. Check for bed twist at least a foot from your headstock. Look up some videos on this. This Old Tony has one.. He's fun to watch.

We used those in machining classes at the community college. Well made and last forever.

Looks like you have a ton of useful accessories.

    Nice find.

The tool holder is a Phase2! Its not a Aloris, but what the heck, it will work! The ways are decent condition. The 1st order of business will be replacing all the belts no easy task but necessary!

Actually it was more than likely in the back of a truck, it's an Army model so I found out! The base was used to mount around a wheel well! And Thanks for the siggestion about Old Tony, I will be watching his youtube videos!

A machine tool class at the local community college would be worth the cost. I took a few as electives for my BS and don't regret it. My father inlaw is a machinist.

I second the machinist classes. Really enjoyed them at the community college. The layout and planning on projects really help making sure things are true and square. Don't have a lathe, but I still use the skills I learned in those classes.

Looks like a piece of $hit, if you box it up I'll come take it off your hands and dispose of it properly!

I just want to know who you had knocked off to get the widow to sell it to you... That seems to be the only way you find one here in the west from what I've seen.

From what I was told by the son! His dad was passed about 8 years ago, the shop had been sitting ever since. The mother passed this year. Dad was a VW engine builder for off road racing, part time! His full time job he was a fire captain. One of his customers was Rick Mears. Lotsa cool pictures. There was a Dyno room, flow bench. Weber carbs manifolds cranks piston and jug sets! A Bridgeport Mill a Clausing lathe! All this was for sale at a auction page! I'm glad I didnt have more money to spend!
