I know the flywheel is balanced to smooth out the inherent vibration of the odd-fire engine.

I have the flywheel which came off of the engine I am about to build but it needs some clean up and resurfacing.

My question is: I assume there are index marks on the flywheel and crank flange. If so can someone show me what to look for?

I'm not sure about the dauntless in particular, but usually the flywheel bolts are not-quite evenly spaced so it will only bolt on in the correct orientation.

May be why I didn't see an index mark. Didn't think of that, but makes perfect sense they would make it so you didn't get it on wrong.

I am not 100%s sure this is a true Dauntless engine, as it was in a CJ5 that was originally a standard with the F134, but it does have the heavy balanced flywheel.

as fireball stated......the bolt pattern dictates the positioning. only fits one way.

Correct, I tried to be very careful when I removed mine then lost my marks somewhere between removal, surfacing and replacement. I was quite relieved when I discovered it only bolted up one way!

I think this is the way with all flywheels for externally balanced engines (aka Detroit balanced). Some engines, like the AMC inline sixes, are neutral balanced and orientation of the flywheel does not matter.

I have set the flywheel on the crank flange and confirm it can only go on one way, so all is well.

I did the same thing the other day. They sure look evenly spaced to the naked eye!
