    All,
I am attempting to get my 60 CJ5 running under load and have a few questions.
Problem: it will start right up but wants to stall when you give it gas and I get a backfire out of the exhaust every once in a while.
What I have checked: the fuel pump is working and I get a good stream of fuel from the hose in a pail thru the reducer. Replaced the accelerator pump, adjusted the float and new needle valve. Cleaned the carb when I had it off and checked for air leaks at the gasket to the manifold. Good spark with a new coil, cap, rotor, points and condenser.
    1) I am converting to electronic points and when taking off the plate I noticed a lot of play I the centrifugal weights when I moved them back and forth is this correct or do I need new springs?

any help would be appreciated as if I am going down the right track? I was thinking after the electronic conversion I may need to buy a new carburetor?

    thanks Marty

make sure all your ignition parts are new and working good, some new ones can be defective

Thanks. I plan to change out the points tonight and add electronic ignition. With that I will have a new coil, new plugs and wires. I will post tonight the results.
I am wondering about the play in the centrifugal weights an not sure if I should look at changing the springs?

    cap and rotor new?

what's wrong with points? i get it's nice to not have to adjust, but SSI is more complicated to repair.

Don't rule out the carb, I did a full rebuild on mine and it would Idle great, but would dump fuel when you hit the throttle so much that it would kill the motor. Bought a new carb and solved that issue.

What engine do you have and what is your timing set at?

I know you said you checked for leaks at the manifold, but I would also check for vacuum leaks/open vac ports throughout the carb.

So just an update, I went out tonight and changed the points out and put in the Pertronix 1548 in my 60 CJ5. Took about 30 min and than I started it up. What a difference, it sat and idled and accelerated like it was new. I went for my first trip down the road with a smile on my face. Not for sure if the condenser was the issue or the points were the issue but it is running great. Thanks for all the help and I will post some pictures once it is completed.
