I have a 1966 CJ5 with the f134. It will run, but with the choke all the way in there is a large dead spot when it is first reved up. It also idles low. It will also occasionally backfire when it is reved up. When braking hard, it will die or come very close (but this might be the case with all of them, I’m not sure). I thought this was a fuel problem, but I have a brand new fuel pump from Kaiser Willys and the carburetor was recently rebuilt by Kaiser Willys. When I got the carburetor back from them, they said that it is tuned perfectly so I’m assuming that it isn’t a problem with the carburetor... I’m at a complete loss, so any help would be appreciated.

I don’t know how good my description of the problem is so I attached a video. Thanks!

turn up your idle speed a bit, and check your timing.

I have fought that same thing. And it’s still not totally gone but I’ve learned to live with it. At least for now. Other fires to chase.

Vacuum reading? Idle RPM? Your description is too vague.

Thinking vacuum leak. Check your base gasket and pcv hoses etc.

Any diagnosis starts with tune-up to specs - points, timing etc.

Sounds like the timing needs advanced a tad.

I just ordered a gauge, so I’ll let you know when it comes in.

I just got the carburetor rebuilt, and apparently they test all of the rebuilt carburetors and it worked well on theirs. So I’d like to think that it is something else so that my money in that rebuild didn’t go to waste... but who knows.

Welcome from Michigan, Like they are saying, it must be Ignition, watch in the carb and made sure the accelerator pump is shooting extra fuel in the carb when pumping the throttle. New Points, proper gap, and timing should fix it for you. Good Luck
