I'll see what it looks like all assembled but that's a likely outcome.

Started to do some maintenance and things snowballed... Drained the engine oil and glued a rare earth magnet to the drain plug after drilling a spot for it to sit. I pulled the drain plug on the D20 not expecting a quart of gear oil to pour out. I wanted to seal the pan too so I removed it and then looked at the drain plug. It had metal bits on it and the pan looked like it was sprinkled with glitter. I went ahead and took it off thinking maybe the main shaft gear had come loose on the transmission causing some of the noise. Nope. It was tight so I just pulled it off for no reason (or so I thought).

Here it is on the healing "bench". Like a fool, I never once inspected it before mating it to the T98. Looks like it had some water intrusion at one point in time. There's pitting on a few different gears but the worst is in the picture. I noticed the air gap on the intermediate gear and thrust washer. I decided to find out how much. An .018" feeler gauge managed to slide between the case and thrust washer. I couldn't find a spec on that in the FSM but I'm thinking it's not within spec. I can move the rear yoke while holding the rear output shaft still. Either the yoke or rear output shaft is worn.

I picked up the windshield from the glass shop today. I called six other places last week and they turned me down. These guys actually can cut glass so they took the job and installed a new gasket for $208.

I just checked the NOVAK rebuild guide and couldn't find anything about intermediate shaft play measurements.

Finally I got to get the state inspection (safety inspection) so I can get it officially registered! I let my brother Robo drive it home~ he's kind of jealous of all the power my little 225 puts out and the power steering is heaven! I'm hoping to pull the jeep to a Nifty50ees. I'll be pulling mine and Robo will be pulling his~ should be fun! now if the weather will just hold out! We both bought the magnetic lights, but I do plan to put the wiring to mine through my tail lights;)

I am always amazed how CJ5 members can change or modify engines, swap transmissions, etc.
I have just added a cigarette lighter with some stuff.
Now I know that my battery is at 13,6 volts when engines is not running, and at 14,6 v when engine runs.
I have also added a mask holder + hand cleaner, that is important.

I also tested my hoist for the hard-top.
As long as the hoist is free, I can put the lawnmower up to clean below, blades, etc...
As every week, my Jeep is getting the food delivery.
We are in high level epidemic crisis here, so better to avoid the new bad aggressive virus.
Our property is a nice prison indeed.

I made a 40-mile round trip into Spokane. This was the first true test of the Varg. It takes time to build confidence in a new rig, and that time is passing without issue. I was able to hang with traffic in all instances, even climbing the steep South Hill comfortably in 3rd gear. I held 75 mph all the way back, and I had to steer with my knee at one point to adjust the strap on my hat, and then I realized I didn’t even need my knee. I think this thing is the closest thing to a ‘new car’ as I’ll ever get.

I use that expression often about "it takes time to build up confidence in a new rig"~ so true, then confidence rises :bananatool:

I ended up taking this thing all apart. I wish I had some needle bearings, thrust washers, and a good intermediate shaft on hand. The engine, transmission, and transfer case now have good clean oil in them.

Just a note. The yoke nuts took a 1 1/8 socket.

The shift fork hex screw takes a 3/16 hex bit.

The whole reason for tearing even further into this was to remove the shift interlock pills. I recommend using a magnet to move it to the core plug then you can pry it out with a screwdriver.

There are two of these interlock pills.

The core plugs that get knocked out when removing the interlock pills are .439" in diameter.

Of course, there was normal wear. So if you're like me and don't plan ahead or have a stand in dowel for the intermediate shaft, just use the shaft itself, and plenty of grease, and the needles will stay put.

I took the time to clean everything and do my best to prevent leaks. The yokes were grooved so I didn't knock the seals in as deep. We'll see how long it holds. I went for a drive and everything seemed fine. @Buildflycrash said he'd pull me to the trailer if I break down. Hopefully, I won't need a rescue. :D

I have no doubt about your driving skills, and this is what I say about my driving expertise.
But on a wet road, I am not sure to stop as fast as a car with these new equipments, even keeping safety distances.
I see it with my other modern cars. But you know it, of course. That's the fun.

Put a Harbor Freight tow bar on the "new" Jeep

There's a 4' deep snow drift that's about 75 yards long blocking the shed where I keep the Jeeps, haven't felt like taking the time to open it up yet, so the new Jeep gets to live outside for a while longer.

I like to have a tow bar to use for short pulls. I decided to try this Harbor Freight item, $70. Seems like a pretty good piece, all hardware included, went on easily. Need to add safety chains.

we tried one of those hauling a suburban, and it was going all over the road. don't know if it was maybe the lunette ring we hooked up to it, but something was seriously off. tighten the bolts WELL.

Good advice, thanks, I did tighten all the bolts down. We don't tow very far or very fast, and usually just on the back roads around here. Maybe just start out on some of the farms roads. Or maybe get it all set up and then welded in place. We'll see . . .

Just seems to be part and parcel to Jeep ownership in the US. Many new Wrangler owners take their Jeeps from the dealer to a Jeep shop and throw thousands of dollars at it lifting it and putting on new tires and decals ect. The little rubber nubs haven't even been worn off the tires yet lol.

There's a guy in Dallas, Tx that has a backyard full of Wrangler wheel and tire take offs. 300 dollars for a full set of tires mounted on wheels. That's cheaper than buying brand new tires.

I used to be in the big mod group and as time went on I moved more towards a mostly stock Jeep with maybe some skid plates and a locker. I found that worked much better for me was easier on parts and saved me a lot of money I could put in the gas tank for exploration purposes.

The post thaw gravel roads had the '69 coverd in mud:

So I washed it for the first time in 3 years:

Then went for a drive with Emmett to dry it off. Looking sharp for an old beater:

And I let Emmett run up the driveway:
