The more you will ride the more you will appreciated it :)

My father has a 06 rubicon with a 3000k teraflex 4" suspension kit and my cj5 ride so much better than his modern jeep :p

I catn go over 50 mph with the rubicon but i can get to 70 mph with the cj5.

I ordered a gauge and (I thought) a matching sending unit off Amazon. The gauge was a PITA to install, as I had to remove two other gauges in order to access the fuel gauge area through those holes. (Whose bright idea was it to run the air intake behind the dash, anyway?)

The sender was another PITA, because I had to remove the old Volvo sender and make the new “universal” one fit in its place.

I decided the easiest way to go about this was just to drill/file a hole in the top and mount the new sender.

When hooked up, the gauge was only reading 1/8 when the tank is nearly full. After a bunch of head scratching and wire tracing, I realized I ordered the wrong sender. :banghead: The new one will be here this week.

Meanwhile, I added a 4-pin connector to make removal easier.

    It’s legal!!!

The first trip out was to meet my wife for a beer after work. It’s such a fun rig. It honestly handles on par with our old BMW 3-Series Sportwagon.

I took it on I-90 for a few miles to see how it would hold highway speeds. No complaints. Straight, true, plenty of power, no vibrations or weird noises. It felt happiest around 63-65. It pulled up to 75 and had more, but I could feel it sucking fuel.

My first jeep in 23 years to have an operational fuel gauge!

But as is everything jeep, nothing is easy. When I sat the new sender next to the old, it was backwards.

I hooked it up to the gauge in hopes that it was just installed upside down at the factory, and... bingo! I flipped it into the jeep's mount, and it works as it should. Success! Everything of basic operation that I set out to do on this thing is finally done.

Also, I started noticing an exhaust tick under load. I checked the manifold nuts, and they were all just a hair over finger tight. I’ll chalk it up as a re-torque on the new gaskets.

I topped off the oil, checked the other fluids, now it should be good for 3k until the next oil change. :sneak:

Probably not this week; we got snow yesterday and snow predicted for tomorrow, but next week is hopeful!

After yesterday’s interstate highway run, I parked in the upper driveway, which is on quite an incline and used the parking brake. Yesterday evening when I went to pull the jeep down into the garage, the drivers side parking brake wouldn’t release.

After some troubleshooting, I figured out what happened. Here’s an old pic of how I had the drivers side cable looped over top of the muffler. It’s a solution that I never really liked, but I didn’t see an alternative at the time:

When I parked it when hot, that cable’s internal plastic sheathing melted into the casing, bonding the cable solid.

My fix was to shorten the cable, cutting out the damaged part, and removing the need to go over the muffler. Here you can see lines in the plastic where it melted. That should be smooth.

I drilled a hole through a bolt and welded the cable to it for a new end. It was cut down to a little 1/2” nub after this.

    Back together. Works great!

This afternoon, my wife and my oldest daughter were heading out to grab something for dinner, and she joked about taking the jeep. I said, “Take it!” And she did!

It was a very uncomfortable feeling, but I knew it was something I was going to have to get over. They were gone for over an hour, out joyriding all over the place. She loved it.

Here she is familiarizing herself with all the controls and leaving.
