Ever since I saw the radial engines on the Mustangs at the air show, I don't worry so much about leaks anymore. Those engines leak like a sieve until they get hot, expand, and then seal. When they parked them, they put a catch pan under them to catch the oil leaking out. If old Jeeps don't leak a little oil, they probably need re-filling.

I have a wheel that keeps losing air so I decided to fix it. :D The compressor will be mounted lower but I couldn't find the right 3rd hand to hold it in place. Little tight in there but it'll fit.

    Baby steps.....

HD steering from Rugged Ridge. Found it used on CL locally so I figured I try it out. Stock tie rod was a little bent anyways. Seems pretty beefy compared to the stock stuff.

The RV2 was sorta tight but it managed to fit. I made a bracket that goes from a valve cover stud to the compressor head and then cut and reused the entire front compressor bracket to hold it to the power steering pump mount. There is another bracket on the back of the compressor that was made from an old shackle that was bent and cut to fit on a cylinder head bolt. I got the pulley from my local farm supply and reused the old compressor rear mount to hold it. This all worked out very well and the compressor works too. No belt squeal either. :bananatool:

Finally changed the oil, filter, trans and transfer case fluid. Feels good to have fresh lube everywhere!

Also finally installed the front shocks. Was tired of bouncing all over town. Tight fit in there, almost thought they weren’t going to fit.

I pulled the rear axles out and repacked the bearings to be safe for the new camping season. I also added grease fittings to the housing so I could fill the area between the inner and outer axle seals with grease. I then pumped in 125 strokes of grease on each side.

It’s been snowing A LOT today.

Ugh... finally decided to clear off the CJ so it’s not such a chore tomorrow morning. Then I made the mistake of moving it out into the road so I could clear out the parking spots. I crept forward about 30’... just far enough that the road starts heading down hill. The parking spots look good, the Jeep won’t reverse what with the freezing rain underneath the snow from yesterday morning, so I decide to go around the block.

    BIG MISTAKE!!! [IMG]

The road up to my place is a bigger hill. “Yeah! I’ll just make a run at it!” I turn to go down the hill and I feel the Jeep turning sideways on me. “Just what I need... a Jeep on its side when I catch a tire on something.” Turns out the only thing I caught was the ditch at the end of the hill. The CJ went in DEEP. First time in my life I’ve ever winched off a stop sign post! So I get myself out of the ditch only to find that the left rear hub must be frozen. I can back up but only break loose the right rear trying to go forward. Fine... backing up... more backing up... then I caught a rut and it pulls me into the NEXT ditch. This was now the SECOND time I winched off a stop sign post. Finally I see headlights in the distance and I flagged down the driver. He’s cool with giving me a tug forward and it broke loose the left rear. We part ways, I can now give the hill a good run, and I made my way back home.

Nope... didn’t get any pictures. [IMG]

    Sorry aviation nerd kicking in.

Mustang used a Rolls Royce Merlin 27L V12. Packard bulit 55,000 of these engines as well.

Now if we want to talk Radial engines, the R2800, 2800 cubic inches. 18 cylinder double row radial. Powered the F4U Corsair across the Pacific. They sound......amazing.

And if you want to get to the tippytop of crazy radials google "corncob radial engine" 4 rows 28 cylinders, 4360 cubic inches :D

    Yesterday

XJ- Changed the oil and collected a sample for oil analysis

Red CJ- Installed a battery, Pulled the radiator and air injection system, did a compression test and installed the aftermarket starter switch in the dash properly instead of having it hanging down below the dash.

Orange CJ- Checked fluids, put a bikini top on.

Through my neighbour found a gent who used to own a upholstery shop.....now works out of his home garage. Recovered my seats in my 70 model for $250. Dropped the ones out of my 66 model when I picked up the completed ones. I kept thinking this is to good to be true.....

    Before and after.

IMOP, coolest sounding engine ever built. They came from the factory with chrome valve covers. 1500+ HP. Most had a 6 to 1 compression ratio and a 2 speed or 2 stage super charger at 15 PSI boost for hi altitude flight.

Replaced the axle seal on my 67. The old seal was flat and sealed on the axle. New one comes out and seals on the hub. But it didnt come out far enough to seal! So I made a 1/4" spacer out of aluminum. The bolts were long enough. Put it all together and tightened the hub. It didnt turn! Took it off again the grease cup was too far out and rubbing. So i bent it out just a little bit bigger to clear and all is well.

Today I installed my new HEI distributor. I followed the directions on another thread, and matched the rotor at TDC to the small post just to the left of the coil hump, as #1 plug. There was some conflicting info, so correct me if that's wrong!
