I’m thinking yes. Now my sites are set on a Ford Dana 24 transfer case. If I use a Ford case, the intermediate shaft can be much shorter and straight. I haven’t discussed the planned axles yet... they were going to be custom anyway, so it won’t matter if the drop is PS or DS.

I still think you should opt for both:

I was trying to rewind a recoil starter spring on an '85 Briggs and Stratton 8 horse engine with one hand and text with the other hand about that same thing yesterday.

I got the gear reduction box separated from the rest of the 203 case.

When I separated the parts of these cases, I found there were no needle rollers in between the male input/female output junction in the reduction box. o_O
It was re-assembled at some point without them in it. They are nowhere. The input has a support bearing and rides on the trans output, and the output rides on two other support bearings, so it didn’t destroy anything, but I’m sure it howled in low range. I ordered a set of used rollers off eBay.

If you’re curious about the size comparison between an NP203 and a Dana 18.....
It’s like looking at Andre the Giant next to an average man.

This is the mainshaft of the NP203, which will be the input shaft of my 0.50:1 overdrive box.

    That needed to be shorter.

I built an intermediate shaft that will go between the Volvo transaxle and the overdrive.

The splined section inserts directly into the differential, and the tube-end will be a press-fit onto the OD’s input shaft and plug welded. Yes, it’s a fairly permanent solution, but I highly doubt this will see enough miles or abuse to wear out the bearing or seal.

Next up, I needed a way to hold the bearing retainer in place, a way to seal this side of the case (since it was open to the chain-section of the case and shared oil), and possibly a mount surface to build from.

    Enter, the chain drive housing.

    This got cut up...

...to solve those issues. I’ll cut a plate that will get fully welded to cover the bearing retainer and house an oil seal. I left part of the housing intact for a mount/skid plate, but it might get deleted if I can find a better solution for a mount.

Volvo 5cyl from a fwd car, with its attached automatic transaxle with welded spider gears, sending power through the mini shaft, to the backwards 203 gear case for 50% overdrive, NP205 (hopefully) transfer case.

It’ll have a killer crawl ratio, yet still hold highway speeds. High/mid/low range.

It’s a Jeep. If it’s not leaking, it’s broken. :bananatool:

it's not a possibility, if it's broken, it's gonna leak even worse.

I like the idea of running the 203 backwards for an OD.
I've thought of doing something like that but never got off my backside to try it.

But of course! To a sprocket/chain to power the Koenig that @tomasinator donated to the cause. :sneak: I’ll have to figure out some sort of disconnect so it’s not always spinning.

Or maybe a twin belt drive that runs off an AC compressor clutch? :sneak:
