I need to repair the transfer case parking brake on my 71-5 with the stock Dana18. I know it's a crappy brake at best but I plan on repairing it. I have removed the rear drive shaft and now need to remove the large nut holding the brake drum in place. What size socket will I need to remove the nut? I plan on hitting a pawn shop or the second hand tool seller (side walk vendor in East L.A.) to buy a single socket.

Gah. I just did this recently, and I literally can't remember if it was 1-1/4 or 1-5/16. It was one or the other to the best of my recollection.

    I think there are 2 different style of nuts.....1 1/4 and 1 5/16.

The one I just did had a castle nut and it was 1 5/16...Richard

This! It depends on what size nut you have. 1 1/4" or 1 5/16".

Mine turned out to be 1 1/8". The brake shoes are missing over half of the braking material. Rivets are there but the rest is gone.
