Check one box for steering...then theres the loud, heavy, underpowered, adapter, framerail strength, and the rest of the boxes to check. Good luck to you.

Nope, not a lunatic. ;) You're just a young guy who had an idea, asked a bunch of experienced guys about it and got a majority response that says you really shouldn't try to do it. :)

It's admirable to rise to a challenge. I believe you could make it work with enough time, money and effort. Realize there is a risk that, even if you succeed, it likely won't turn out like you imagine.

Just sayin', you have to pick your battles. Looks like this battle will cost too much time, money and effort to be worthwhile.

If you need help with the 353 let me know, I rebuilt close to a hundred 53 and 71 series engines. I'm also in NY where you said your project is.

I wanted to do this myself but I never planned on using the stock frame, springs, or axles. I get notifications on fb marketplace when "detroit" is posted. I've found a 453 but no 353 yet.

Do it but do it the right way and you might be able to enjoy what you built and even prove some of us wrong....or right.

For the record, I never said I was against it, I just said to make sure you do your due diligence. I love watching oddball projects.

x2- As a teenager I got a job for about a year driving a quarry truck. It was a 35 ton truck with a detroit 6-71 series engine and a 5 speed unsynchronized straight shift. At first I tried to be real easy and not drive it too hard. Then the boss said drive it like you stole it and the law is chasing you, don't let off it until you top the rim of the quarry. It was about a 2 mile pull up to the top in 1st or second gear and took about 12 -15 minutes every load. I had a big brick that I laid on the gas pedal to hold it wide open, engine turning against the governors the whole time. I thought that thing would not last the week. I worked there 50 hours a week for the entire year, never did they need to touch that engine except service it once a week. They must be tougher than I thought.

Some of the toughest MFin engines out there. That sounds like a pretty cool job for a teenager. I got lucky and never had to flip a burger patty as a kid. We had family that owned a Machine/Engine Shop. I spent my High School years running lathes, mills, boring machines, presses ect. As an aspiring gearhead/nerd I couldn't have asked for a better job.

Yep, those old trucks were built in the late 40's. just a straight pipe off the exhaust manifold straight up thru the hood.
I wore ear plugs and a hearing protector head set together!
