Heading out to garage and may have this done before I check back but what is the preferred method for pilot bushing removal? Then if your preferred method fails?

    Thanks.

I bought a pilot bushing puller. The tool makes removal a breeze.

Pack the inner bore with wheel bearing grease, and a hardwood dowl (or aluminum stock) thats close to the size of the bore. Stick the dowl in the bore and whack it with a hammer. Never had this method fail, and it doesn't hurt the old bushing. Many times, the old bushing is not worn and is of better quality than the new replacement.

The 5/8” bit drilled thru. The 3/4” bit ripped it out.

A tap of the proper size will pull it out when it bottoms on the hole.

The one I used on a jeep 258 didn't score it very deeply, the bushing was reusable.

I used bread instead of grease. The punch doesn't have to fit as perfect and it's easy to clean up.

Wonder bread is good....cheap white bread. need soft fine grained bread that can easily be smushed into a dough ball....dry whole grain bread doesn't work as well as it doesn't like to stick together into a sort of 'dough'

I use bar soap, works great. pack it in there, and then use a properly sized Brass Drift, or Wooden Dowel.

I actually found a pipe bushing that was close enough to cut its way in and bushed it down to a common alemite. Pumped grease until it popped out.

Thanks 3b, my day is complete. I learned something new.

I had to google alemite, I'd never heard the word before. I've always just called them grease fittings or zerks.

I use a big bolt that is just a little bigger then the pilot bushing hole. Don't remember the size but it starts fairly easily and one bottoms out against the pilot hole pushes it right out.[IMG]

That's how I did it too. I went one step further and ground some flutes into the leading edge sides of the bolt to give the chips somewhere to go. Worked like a charm and no grease mess.

I used wheat bread to push my crank bushing out in a 1.8t motor for my Vanagon. Bread displacement works amazingly easy. Even with the socket allowing some blow by. Full disclosure: Side effects may be severe, it did make me hungry. When I was done I had only used a small piece of the bread so I ate the rest.
