I have a 1965 CJ5 Tuxedo Park with the column shift that I am restoring. Are there diagrams anywhere for this? I would like to use it again but its kind of worn and I may have to fabricate some parts. I can't find any parts schematics at all. HELP!!

I took a quick look in my JEEP Universal Series Service Manual, there is a diagram on page 240 of the transmission remote control. The Service Manual can be your best friend ;)

You might find a used DJ column for parts, the Dispatcher had a column shift. My first Jeep was a 1960 Dispatcher two wheel drive. I put a floor shift in my Tux, but kept the column, trans, and dash. just in case I want to go that way. I can take pictures for you if you want, my linkage ends are worn so I was going to replace them with hime joints, don't know how to spell it, but that is what it sounds like. PM me and I will take pictures for you. Good Luck

Much of the wear in the Tux linkage is in the two rods that connect from the base of the column to the side of the trans. Heim joints will last for a while and provide good adjustability.
The other main wear point is the block at the base of the column. There are two threaded discs, each with a slot that acts as the neutral gate, threaded into the block at the column base. The edge of the slot wears, making an inprecise gate, causing sloppy shifting, especially between 1st and 2nd gears.

We had Volvos with 4 speeds that I learned on but my uncle had a 65 Wagoneer with 3 on the tree and I loved driving it.

Reaching back here, do you have a picture of how these are put on? I googled the Heim joint, having difficulty visualizing how to make it work. Or I am looking at the linkage not the block?
    Thanks,

I will go to my storage and take some pictures if that is what you want, I think the shift rods are here but the column and Trans is in my storage unit.

If you put those have the Heim joints that would be great! I have been on the fence about a floor shift. Hate to do it, cost and originality.
    Thank you!

The factory shift rods have a square block with a "pin" sticking out the side to attach to the column base connections. The block has a hole drilled through it for the threaded shift rod. A fine thread nut is used on each side of the block to allow adjustment. Heims are not really needed unless the pins are nearly worn through.

Thank you! That explanation somehow got the light bulb to go on. I understand how you would use those now. had a total vision block, seems ingenious now. I will report back when I get some garage time.

My cast iron shift gates on the column are in good shape. The balls on the rods show a little wear but are still usable, and the pins are still good, so they could be used without replacing yet. When I took the Tux trans and column out they still worked good, I wanted the floor shift, and the 66 Ross steering column in my Jeep. I have all the parts to make it column shift again, but would want to rebuild the Trans and column first. When I restored my 1960 DJ 3, I welded up the holes in the rods went into re drilled them to factory size made it tight again. Good Luck. Rick

Took awhile to come back to the top of the list.
Read and re-read all I could find on column shift. Which was about a paragraph and a half.
Have access to another column set up, which was much tighter under the hood than mine.
Changed bushings on the column levers. One metal bushing was frozen on the shaft.
The other set up had washers top and bottom of the levers.
Cleaned anti seized lined the levers in the lock position so the shift rods drop in as center as I could.
Took it for a quick test drive, I like it! It may still not be as tight as it was in 65. I think it is close to what it was in 75.
It feels really good. First is not as low on the column as third. Hoping that is as it was designed.
This was done in the middle of replacing shackle bushings. Couldn't test drive it locked up.

Hoping the next project I take on is a little easier. Like new floors or something.
