    Hello all,

my new hubs come in on Monday and I want to get right at work to get them on. A few questions:

    1. Do the races go in as easily as they came out? Meaning do I just tap them in or do I need to have them pressed?

    2. On another one of my posts someone mentioned that there are two sizes of OD for the races. But when I ordered there was only one. Now my Jeep is a Frankie and my frame and axles appear to be from a flat fender so maybe that is why? I bought new hubs as when I went to put in the new races they did just fall in. So am I mixed up on this?

    Thanks!

The races should just tap in.

I honestly have no idea if there are. I just know that what I have bought before fit properly and I learned how to install races from a professional mechanic that could fix pretty much anything.

They should be just a snug fit, just tight enough so that you would need a hammer and small punch to tap them in place. If they just fall in they are not tight enough and might turn inside the new hub causing the hub to wear and ruin it.

Early wheel hubs used smaller OD bearings and races.
Like on flat fenders and Bantam trailers.
The later hubs use a larger OD bearing, race and wheel seal.
Middle spindle opening diameter on both bearings is the same.

So then a newer hub would work on an older spindle then?

    Correct.
And they interchange with the proper diameter wheel bearings and wheel seals.

Is this why the bearing was stuck hard on the spindle on my front D30? I had to use a bearing splitter to get it off.

I am pretty confident have a dana25 front axle/hubs and replaced bearings/races seal on my hub yesterday. From what I understand, the seal on the dana25 is smaller than the newer dana 27s.

I got the Timkin part numbers from here and got them at a local bearing store RESOURCE: Differential Bearing Part Numbers - G503 Military Vehicle Message Forums I have had a hard time getting what I needed from the various venders and the omix seals seem to wear out fast). You could probably get the OD and ID from Timkin online and measure what you have.

The two races in the hub were the same. I was able to slowly tap both in with a brass drift punch and a hammer and then cleaned it out well (this is what the Moses Ludel book said was ok if you didn't have a press). On the race for the outside of the hub, it fell in the first 2" or so where the spindle nuts sit, but then I had to tap it in the last 1" where the bearing race sits (if that makes sense). Hope that helps.

I would assume that everything made after the change would be the slightly larger size.

I talked to Kaiser Willys and the early hubs do require a different race LM######. The hubs they are selling take the smaller races that are typical now. Sounds like i also had a D27 hub.

The hubs they sell take the smaller races? That doesn't make any sense!

From above, I'd guess the bearing and seal OD get larger with the newer style. This would only affect the hub design, not the spindle.

You should not mix old races with new bearings, or vice-versa. Just buy the right bearing and it will come with the right race.

If the newer-style hub is a work-alike to the older-style hub with the right bearings and seal, they aren't going to sell both types. Just use the newer-style hub and buy the right parts.
