I thought I'll give the die one more time to cut a new thread. Late last night I ordered a better quality die from McMaster-Carr. It was $20.97 for one die, plus tax and shipping. The set of taps and dies I have now was only $32.99 from Amazon and that was for a 40 piece set. Hopefully this one will do the job. Here's what I ordered.
Product Ordered: 2576A629 Uncoated Carbon Steel Screw Thread Die, 1-1/2" OD, 5/16"-24 UNF Right-Hand Thread
    Delivery Date: Sep 18 20.97
    Price: $20.97
Applicable shipping and tax will be added.

I uploaded a YouTube video of a drive around the neighborhood in the CJ6. This was originally recorded in August, about 6 or 7 weeks ago. Between other stuff going on and learning the editing software, it's taken me this long to get it completed. And if you watch it you will realize that I'm still learning the software. :banghead:

And I must confess to plagiarizing Fireball's "Canine retention safety device." I think I got the exact same device except maybe a larger diameter clamp. It works great. @Fireball, if royalties are due, please let me know, I'll consider your demands. :D But remember, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

    Here's Fireball's original.

And here's mine in the YouTube video.

You're welcome to that royalty free!

That's a happy pup out for a drive.

He was supposed to sell it to me cheap because the shift knob is broken!

    Haha! No problem.

My wife keeps asking me what she's supposed to do with the Jeeps when I'm gone. We have 6 kids and 4 Jeeps and my wife wants to keep the Wrangler. I keep telling her that some of them have no interest in Jeeps. I guess I could offer to buy a few more Jeeps, but I was banned after buying the CJ6.

Actually I fixed that. As soon as I get my Beaming Pix account set up, I'll post about it.

Update regarding the sheared off shifter stalk. Earlier I mentioned that in attempting to remove the knob from the shifter stalk the top of the stalk broke off. I had ordered a better quality die from McMaster Carr. I had a set of taps and dies that I had purchased from Amazon. The die from this set wouldn't cut it. The one from McMaster Carr worked great! Here's a comparison of the two dies.

And here is a picture of the die cutting the stalk.

    The threaded stalk.

    And with the knob installed.

I was a little concerned with cutting the threads as the stalk is tapered and gets a little larger as you go towards the transmission, but the new die cut it just fine. With shipping the new larger single die was within about $5.00 of the price of the entire set from Amazon. But it was worth it! I guess something about having the right tool for the job.
