Put the '71 into work detail. The quad is dead with a bad float valve in the carb, so the Jeep got the water tank and made the rounds tonight:

Got a decent weekend out in the garage. I'm mostly compelting smaller detail items while I wait for a few more parts to come in for the drivetrain. I'm hoping I can use this saturday to get most of the tub done and get started on paint.
    1. Painted some more odds and ends
    2. Got the Tcase finished with exception of the shift shaft seals, all I needed was the thinnest shim in the new pack of shims to get within spec ha. Amazon dropped the ball on the seals and lost them so had to reorder.
    3. Rear driveshaft rebuilt with new slip yoke
    4. Replaced Valve Cover gaskets. Engine is a little sludgy. More than I would like but I'm going to ride it till it won't go anymore. Compression is still alright.
    5. Got the clutch linkage rebuilt
    6. Steering gearbox mounted back on the frame
    7. Remounted the headers
    8. Reconnected the exhaust
    9. Replaced the ancient spark plugs
    10. Remounted the carburetor
    11. Started trying to reverse the hack job one of the previous owners did with all the emissions gear.
    12. Put the sending unit and new seal on to the gas tank
Not as much as I was hoping to get done but made some decent progress on getting the frame/drivetrain where I want it before I start messing with the tub. The tub/body I'm not super concerned with. I'm going to make it look decent but I'm not going for a show Jeep so I'm hoping that after I get all this squared away I'll be picking up speed towards a basic completion.

Today I ground off some rivets and got rid of the f4 motor mounts, in preparation for welding in a set of v6 mounts. This, IMO, is the best part about big conferences while working from home. Although my headset doesn't fit great with a face shield on!

In the grand scheme of things, it was a really easy task, but I've gone in circles for months before making this decision (mainly because the frame is just "ok", having come from the rust belt.)

Btw, for those of you considering POR15, that's what it looks like after 20 years. It's pretty much coming off in sheets, and looks ratty everywhere else. I suspect that the top coat got thin, and then uv ruined it. My fault probably.

Are those brass knuckles at 4 o'clock?

My jeep also sleeps. Hasn't been started in a month. Too much going on and the jeep is boxed in by the camper in the driveway. The camper normally lives out of town, but i had to park it somewhere and fix the car that was pulling it.

The new vaccuum advance can and new spark plug wires showed up for the '71, so I installed them and set the timing and idle speed. It's really running great with the ignition rebuild.

This leaky thermostat housing has been annoying me:

It was so pitted the radiator hose would drip no matter how much you tightened the clamp:

The bolt holes go into the water jacket and the treads were pretty rusty. Cleaned them up with a tap:

Irritating the new neck doesn't come with a barb shape on the bypass hose:

So I used a hand file to make a least a little lip:

Used ARP thread sealer on the new bolts since they go into the water jacket. I had some left over from my Mustang projects. Like all ARP products, it's expensive but it's good stuff:

All buttoned up with NO LEAKS even after some heat cycles:

Of course, the longer part of the story. I had enough smarts to back the Jeep out of the garage before burping the coolant, but not enough smarts on how much to start with. I put too much in it and when the engine warmed up, coolant started burping out the filler and into the fan creating a fine mist of sticky coolant over the entire front of the Jeep. I hoped it would be over soon, but it kept getting worse and worse. I finally shut the engine off, filled the coolant to the top, and capped it this time. Then I added extra coolant to the overflow bottle. I hosed off the whole front of the jeep/engine to rinse the coolant off and went for a drive to warm it up and burp the coolant a different way.

That went great so I pulled into the garage to set the timing. I loosened the distributor bolt and just as I was getting ready to point the timing light at the crank pully, the engine died and would not start. Figuring I rotated the distributor when loosening it, I tried advancing it and retarding it but neither did any good. It still wouldn't start. Then it dawned on me the timing light was not flashing when I was cranking. I pulled the distributor cap and sure enough it was full of condensation from the earlier coolant/garden hose escapades. I gave up and went to bed to let it dry. The next morning it started right up and I set the timing.

In retrospect, I'm lucky I made it down the road and back to the garage before the condensation disabled the distributor.

Since then, I took the jeep up a bunch of the hills on the property in low range and it's staying cool. Getting the timing set right can make a big difference in engine temp. I think with a new shroud and a better pusher fan, the 350 won't have any more cooling issues until I get the 225 ready for the Jeep.

It does pop out of low range though. Good thing I have another transfer case to rebuild for the Jeep. In the meanwhile, the shift lever will get strapped to the seat frame when in low range.

Stolen from ITLKSEZ ( that’s what we’re about here right?). I hate my stockish Jeep mirrors. They shake like crazy and the passenger side is next to impossible to get adjusted.

No test drive yet but I’m pretty sure I’ll keep these and want to remove the square mirrors on a stick.

I rebuilt the heater controls in for the '71 tonight. The fan worked, but the buttons would stick and the vacuum valve wasn't working. A new heater core is on the way.

Bent flapper door arm, since bent straight:

The face plate is in decent shape:

The "flipper" knob is present, but cracking. I filled the cracks with cyanoacrylate adhesive in the hoping to make it last longer:

    Eww dirty:

    Gummed up vacuum valvle:

Disassembled and scrubbed with warm soapy water. Now clean (enough for me):

Polished the vacuum valve faces with some 600 grit and put a VERY light film of grease on it before reassembling:

All back together looking pretty and working as it should with moving parts greased and the felts oiled:

I should have it back in the Jeep tomorrow or this weekend.

Both of the vacuum actuators in the duct work with the Mighty-Vac so the inside portion of the heater should be working. Need to get the core swapped, heater hoses hooked up, and run a fresh air hose.

Not immediately, but I want to run a couple of relays for the blower motor to protect this impossible to find switch.
