i have a 1966 cj5 with dauntless and t86 3 speed. I have the opportunity to purchase a 71 with the Dauntless for parts.

My t86 has problems so I am wondering if the transmission from the 1971 is a direct bolt in replacement? I assume the 71 should have the t14 if it is original.

    Thanks for any input

    now here's the real question
would it be cheaper to rebuild what you have
or to buy a parts jeep
71 had the one piece bell housing . but if you swap all the parts . go for it
the only thing that might be different is the pilot bushing maybe

A '71 will have a T-14, which is a superior choice to the T-86. Synchromesh 1st gear, better parts situation. If your T-86 has any broken gears, typically you'd replace all the gears with those from a T-90J. Lots of discussion of this in old posts if you search.

Regarding the cost, you can buy a complete T-86 with T-90J gears from Herm - compare. T-86 Transmissions | Herm The Overdrive Guy

The '71 should also have a flanged offset Dana 44 rear axle, which is quite sought after. The main downside to the flanged axle - if limited slip, they came with the TracLock instead of the PowrLock in earlier tapered axle.

First post - welcome from Boston!

I just did this same swap. Some new mounting holes in the crossmember and the clutch pivot on the frame had to be moved back.

I like a few of the 1966 features more than the 1971 but all things being equal I would prefer a 71 over a 66.

thanks for all the input, I have not seen the 71 in person yet but unless it's in horrible condition i will most likely purchase. Once I get her home I may be back with some more questions.

The 71 should also have a cable actuated clutch that's generally better than the linkage type. I'd swap that over too.

71 would also have had an OEM rear tank ....
