Ok, so I have been posting this over on the 71 CJ6 for sale, but now its time for its own thread. 1968 CJ-6, Dauntless, T-14. Went out to Vencenes Indianan for this one, from rust belt Chester, Ma. 2200 miles round trip, lots of fuel and no sleep, well except for a couple of hours. Tried another turn and burn, but just couldn't do it. Guess I'm getting old. Aprox. a 30 hour trip, but I think it was worth it. Pretty much rust free except for one small spot on the wheel well on drivers side. As of today after a concerted effort to clean it up a tad, its a pretty nice set of bones with a descent running engine and a kind of crappy T-14. I'm going to get into the motor on monday and check timing, plugs, points etc. Oh, and the tranny. I'll pull the top cover and see whats inside. I'm thinking syncro's or maybe worse. It does not want to go into 1st or reverse without much effort, a few swears and a little force. Shifts ok once rolling, but its all neither here nor there until I pull the cover. I have a great T-14 and T case in the barn and was thinking of pulling the engine , tranny and T case and replacing them right off the bat. Pulling the engine to give it a coat of paint while its out and checking clutch and pressure plate while I'm at it. Have a couple of new ones in the barn, so may just check and replace those as well. It sometimes pays to hord. Brakes eems surprisingly good, but will check all of those out, while I'm draining all the fluids for new gear oil. So here it is as of right now. Giving two Castrol super cleanings and after that, it actually started right back up. Motor sounds good, but runs a little rough. Carb needs a rebuild more then likely and you guessed it, I have a kit. :bananatool: But I'll check out points etc, while I'm at it. 373 gears are whats in it, but I have a couple of flanged offset 44's also and three Dana 30 fronts with disc. Just saying is all. I'm leaving the axles alone for now unless I find just inside the diffs.

Forgot to take pictures of the gate, but its ribbed on the inside. Not exactly sure what its off, but I'll post pictures of it later and see what you guys think. Hats channels are all there and rust free. Body mounts are all in place with none missing or flattened out. Floors are rust free with the exception of a small half dollar area around one of the cover plate bolts on tranny hump. Both risers are intact and solid. I'm thinking this is a good place to start. I have some new BFG KM-3's coming monday. A set of Rancho springs coming hopefully end of the week. And I may use my new in box Con-Ferr shackles on it. Wiring is FUBAR of course and debating about a Painless or just a cheaper 22 circuit fuse box set up. Spartan switch is rough, but maybe fixable. I have a chineese replacement in a box. Steering is loose, but have not looked at that yet, but that will be this week as well. I'm going to being trying to decide on the button head bolt conversion with cross over steering. But I'm clean out of two hole knuckles right now, or just do the Dana 30 ???

So please post your thoughts on my build. I'm wide open for suggestions on this one. This was not on my radar, but it popped up and well and I was wanting another driver while my other six is being built. My thoughts are capable driver not a rock crawler. But I know I will find myself on some New Hampshire granite sooner or later and hopefully before the snow comes. Its a tapered 44 rear and 27 front, which was stock for the year. And yes, I know the front windshield frame is not correct, but I like the motor on the outside. I have a full hard top for it as well. Tried a few sections on it today and not sure with the funny taper on the roll bar, ifs it will fit with that cage on it. But didn't feel like assembling the hard top today to see. I'm not nuts over the cage, but not fixing or replacing it this year.

I also have several cast iron manifolds and was going to order a stock exhaust for it this week. I have a new set of ceramic coated headers for it, but not a fan. Glass packs are cheap ( with headers) and maybe an option for this year, maybe two glass packs on both sides or a Tractor Supply tractor muffler on both sides. They actually sound good on my Scrambler.

Have not looked up the color code yet, my tag is there, but not visible any more after I hit it with Super Clean. I think, if I remember right it was pacific coast white maybe ?? Something like that. I like the white and have never seen a early Jeep in my area that color.

So any suggestions on where to buy a stock exhaust system ? Doesn't seem to be much out there for it.

Fireball thanks. I think I'm going to end up going that way. Have you ever used that system? If so, how was the fit?

I've not used it personally yet. I just researched it out for the future.

Just ordered it. Was surprised after I ordered it, that it said 6-8 weeks for shipping. Wow. Guess for the rest of this year, it will be my other set of over frame headers and some tractor supply tractor mufflers.

Tires came in today. BFG KM3's. 33/1050-15's. But bad news is, Morris sent me an email saying the Rancho 2 1/2 inch springs are on back order and they have no idea when Rancho is making or shipping more. So I went and called Quadratech and they told me the same thing. Ouch. No lift, no tires. I know I'm going to catch flax, but they are going on WHITE spoke wheels. I thought white would look good with fresh white paint some day. It is a white Jeep after all.
Anyone have a set of lift springs for sale ?? :banghead:

So I called RC directly. Gave me a discount for being retired LEO. On the way here. Might be before the weeks end. Great sales rep to. I'm glad to get that done.

My favorite air cleaner. There was one on my 67 and another came with the M38.

Had to pull the tranny and TC today. Will be rebuilding both on the bench. Ordered the T14 kit and debating Terra Low for the TC. Anyone have a non OD kit kicking around ?

Just to play devil's advocate, have you ever found yourself needing lower gears in the jeep? I feel like tera lo gears are for west coast folks. In fact, here in Virginia, I've heard quite a few people say that they prefer the gearing in a "sport" jk to that of a rubicon (sort of an apples to apples comparison).

Of course, the 4 wheeling here is more bad fire roads than rock crawling.

Agreed, it would have been nice to have lower gears on that trip. 3.73 and standard Dana 18 aren't low enough.

Fireball hit the nail on the head. I'm not re-gearing the axles right now and they are 373's. And I am adding a set of 33/1050-15 KM3's. I have two what appears to be good T-14, but the one it came with grinds like hell when attempting to go from a stop to 1st or rev. The first gear where the syncro's engage are not the best in the world, but not the worse I have ever seen . When I removed the top cover and looked inside, the gears and all look nice and there is no excessive slop and not a drop of water. The one I removed from my 71 with Duantless has a little rust on one gear but also seemingly nice and tight. So I pulled the bell to clean it all up along with the adapter. It has a newer clutch plate in it and the throw out bearing appeared to be in good shape. So my question is how high should a stock release bearing be ?? The reason I ask, is I have another what I thought was new release bearing for a Dauntless and its a longer design. And I apologize for not taking pictures today when I was working on it. Could this have been the reason for hard engagement of the tranny ??

But anyways, I took the TC done to bare case and its all clean and ready for a Low kit. The T14 is nice and clean as well, but not broken down yet. I also have access to a T-15, which I had in my 46 and thinking about going that way, instead of putting money into the T-14. What do you guys think ?

This Jeep will be going off road, but not rock bouncing off road. More like New Hampshire granite trails at a slow rate of speed, oh and some mud now and then. But its not a slammer and banger.
