Nice work ... When I sold my first car, a Citroën traction Avant, I filled the holes with plaster, then black paint... Old times.
We used to fill with paper, then plaster for the surface smooth.

    More steady progress.

    Not very exciting though.

Got the new bearing into the gearbox and it solved the problems there.

Finally got to the end of the panel repairs.
Bonnet, front arches, grille and windscreen frame is done.

Ended up removing the entire double skin panel on the front guards and replaced it with a single layer of 3mm thick.

Bit of overkill but it wont bend or rust out anytime soon.

Other bits had various rusted out sections in the low spots so some fiddly repair work done.

Then put some of it together to start setting up the bolt on items.

    Decent ground clearance.

Got the clutch and brake master cylinders positions confirmed.
Using a ford F100 master brake cylinder as it is easier to get that here than an AMC original one.
It seems to be a close fit for size and capacity.

Changed plan away from the boosted brake setup. Caused more problems with the clutch cylinder.

Clutch hydraulics are new Landcruiser items, so should have enough grunt out of both those to do the job.

Then moved on to the seating arrangements.

I need a bit of legroom so the seats are a bit further back than they would have originally been.
A bit of a bonus about the extra length of a CJ6.

Using Holden (GM) leather seats in the front and will remanufacture an original dicky seat to go into the rear.

Had to cut out and rebuild a fair amount of the hatch cover of the toolbox which was easier than trying to repair the original hatch and rebates.

Seat runners are welded to the angle frame which is hinged at the rear.
Retainer brackets hold the front down.

Plan is to attach the hatch of the toolbox directly to the angle frame of the seat so you access the toolbox as soon as the seat is raised.

Passenger seat is mounted on formed 2 x 1/4 inch flat bars.

Remember that we are upside down and back to front down here. :ausflag:

Also backed away from the idea of putting additional fuel tank under the floor.

Once I had a good look at the space available I found the handbrake cable will be affected if the tank was too low, and halving the size so it is on one side only, or splitting the tank and having a joiner tube, is a diminishing return on the work needed to do it.

So jerry cans for long trips it will be.

The bride is getting excited and a little bit impatient.

The spirit level is to assess how high the roll bar needs to be once the canvas goes on later.

Happy wife happy life as they say Frank.

Donna even loves to get out with the military vehicles that I have started to rebuild.

Started out with the Bren gun carrier.

Picked up the paint and associated undercoats and thinners etc this week.

Using a proper auto paint with a clearcoat on top this time.
Might have to revisit some of the body work and get it looking a bit straighter to do the paint justice.

Worked on the front bar/ winch mounting and finalised the roll bar design this weekend.

Both need to be pulled off to be welded yet.

Added a little bar underneath to help protect the steering box.

Those seats look comfortable. It's strange to me that the tool box is not on the passenger side. Looking great!

Got the paint and the clear coat onto all the bits over the last 2 weekends.

Also got the under body deadener sprayed late today.

The colour is a metallic burnt orange style.
Looks better in person than the pics.

This paint has kicked my arse compared to the industrial style of paint I normally use.

So much can go wrong (and did) at each stage.

Needed to put on a grey primer because this colour needs it to show up the best.

Then it gets rubbed back smooth.
Multiple colour layers to get the depth and shade correct and even.
    Then clear coat layers.

    Big progress.

Got it moving under it's own power.

Have been doing the wiring for the past 2 weekends.
Using the original harness, pulled all the connections and cleaned everything as best we could.

The dash instruments and wiring coming together.

    Front panels going on.

At that stage I started to do a few test runs in the paddock to test the brakes etc.

But had a problem with backfiring through the carby and generally not running smooth.

Father in law adding his experience to the fault finding session.

So we discovered that there was a few problems at one time meshing together that made it hard to determine what was really going on.

Sometimes there would be a backfire, sometimes not. Especially under load and acceleration.

    Discovered a few things.
The brand new spark plug leads had 1 bad lead in the set.
No. 1 cylinder would have intermittent spark at times.
That was discovered while using the timing light to check the timing. The light would stop sometimes.

The next thing we discovered was a bad connection on the ballast resistor wire to the coil that I had installed as recommended by the coil manufacturer.

A double check of the wiring diagram / repair manual showed that there should be a resistor wire already built in to the harness.
Which I had attached to the ballast resistor.
So I was effectively double resisting the power to the coil.

The coil was was only getting around 7 Volts according to the multimeter.
    Not ideal.

Took the ballast resistor out of the circuit and was then getting 10.5 volts to the coil.

    Much better.

The original starter solenoid was also playing up so had that to deal with as well.

Was getting pretty tired of the whole thing by this stage.

So.... after sorting out the electrical issues that we had found, we still had a backfire going on.
Tried various timing settings to make it better but it never went away completely.

After we thought the problem was solved we were disappointed.

Nice background noise from the Rainbow Lorikeets that live around our place as well.

This guy likes to come and check out what is going on up close.

As the rebuild had progressed I had got a few new items thinking they would be a good idea to eliminate any problems using the old original bits and pieces.

One of those new items was a copy of the original Carter carby.
Guessing it was made in china, got it of ebay.

So The father in law suggested the carby may be over fueling and it might be an idea to change back to the old original one that was on the engine from the start.

See if that helped things or made a difference.

    Problem instantly solved.

Did a few higher speed runs and tested it right out, no worries after the old carby went back on.

    So in short.
New parts are not always the solution.
    Sometimes they create the problem.

Plug lead failed. Put all the old ones back on.
Ballast resistor wire poorly made and bad connection. Got rid of the resistor all together.
New carburetor not performing as well as the 45 year old one.

Also discovered we have massive over steer when on the road.

A small wheel movement feels like it wants to spear off the side and it gets to wandering all over the place when you correct it back.
