This won't be much of a build thread. It's more of an effort to document another Jeep. Other than a few minor changes I plan to drive it mostly as is. Any updates I do make will be posted here. This is the CJ6 referred to in this classified ad. Cj6 For Sale Near Austin Texas. I brought it home yesterday. Other than surface rust, one small hole in the passenger side floor, and the windshield it's in decent shape. The guy I bought it from bought it about 2 years ago from John Coldwell in Waxahachie, Texas. John bought it back in 1992. John buys, sells, and trades military vehicles mostly, but also deals in civilian Jeeps. If you've never been to his website it's worth checking out. Vintage Military Trucks Home Page . He does a good job of documenting and describing the history of the vehicles that he has or has owned. Here's the history of the CJ6 I purchased. 1975_CJ-6_Jeep

So last week I started gathering my paperwork to transfer the title and register the CJ6. Pre-Covid I could just drive the tax assessor's local office which is in the city adjacent to mine, about 6.5 miles away. You'd take a number and when they announce your number you would present your paperwork, pay your money and walk out with your plates and/or new registration sticker. Our county (Dallas) tax offices are closed to the public. So I called the state to find out my options and I was told I could register in a nearby county that was open to the public. I called 3 adjacent county tax offices and all 3 told me that they were NOT accepting customers that were from Dallas County. Basically they did not want to risk bringing Covid-19 to their counties. I understand their concern, Dallas has been hit pretty hard with cases.

My other option was to mail in my paperwork. I was a little concerned mailing the original title in with the Post Office's new mandate to only deliver the mail that could be accomplished without overtime. I called the Dallas County main tax office and spoke with a really helpful lady who suggested sending it certified mail. She also listed all the forms and documentation that I would need along with computing my total bill.
I called my insurance company to add the Jeep, required to register a vehicle. They quoted an annual premium of $84 for full coverage and that was with an agreed upon value of $10k! I thought that was pretty good. I also had to pass a safety inspection and send that documentation along with the signed over title, two other state forms, proof of insurance, and of course a check for the fees and taxes. I got everything together and went to the Post Office Saturday morning and sent everything off certified mail. Now I wait.......

I also scheduled an appointment with a glass company for this Thursday. When I bought the Jeep it had an 18" crack along the bottom of the windshield. It also has what looks like white paint over spray. I had to call several glass companies, seems like some of them don't like working on older vehicles. The company I found will come to the house and replace it here. :bananatool:

Yep, besides the company I'm using I found one other that's actually associated with Gas Monkey Garage. I submitted an online request with Safelite and was told someone would call, but never received a call. The shop I'm using is replacing the windshield and the gasket.

As long as it doesn't impede vision I guess it's okay. The crack runs horizontally along the very bottom of the windshield and I really don't notice it when driving.
What our state does is require you to pay sales tax on the purchase price. We don't have a state income tax which I'm very thankful for, but they get their money in other places.

I just got this in the mail today. I know it looks rough, but the pages inside are in good shape. The binding is split after about 20 to 25% of the pages. It actually is in two pieces. I'll probably use some clear tape to attach the two together. It covers CJ5, CJ6, Cherokee, Wagoneer, and the trucks. It was $19.99 shipping included from Dead Jeep. Last week I got the CD version from Faxon. They were out of print versions.

Good Score ....... That's your best reference. I have the same TSM , which had a bad binding too . I removed each page & put them in a 3 ring binder.
Good winter work, round 'chere. :study:

So last night while taking pictures of the dash for other reasons, I noticed this sticker on the dash. I've only had the Jeep for about 2 weeks and somehow hadn't noticed it until now.

Does anyone recognize this sticker? I looked in the TSM and if the rear locker was a factory item it looks to be the Trak-Lok? There's nothing on the sticker to suggest it's a factory sticker. This Jeep appears to be a base model with few if any options, so maybe the locking differential was installed later? At some point I'll pull the cover and see if I can tell what it is. According to the TSM the Trak-Lok requires a specific gear oil so if that's what I have I'll replace the oil with that.

@timgr, you seem to be the resident AMC Jeep expert. If you can impart your wisdom, I would be most appreciative! But anyone that knows anything please respond, Thanks!

It was an option & that notice is OEM.......... as far as I know. Jack both rear wheels off the ground , spin one wheel forward . If the other wheel spins forward , you've got a TracLoc I just put a TracLoc in my '75 . You just need 90w gear oil & 8 oz. of Limited Slip additive in the punkin. If you hear a chatter while going around a corner, add a bit more of the additive, but don't overfill.

Lockman, thanks for the response. I'll check out the rear axle.

The glass company showed up and replaced my windshield. There were 2 older gentlemen that knew what they were doing. One of them was the owner of the company. While he was here I showed him the windshield frame to the M170. It originally came with a divided molding and 2 pieces of glass. I can buy a molding to fit a single pane of glass and that's what I'm planning to do. So I asked if the glass was not available could they cut a piece for me. The owner gave me his name and number, said he had a shop in his garage, didn't live too far from me, and said he does that all the time for Jeeps and hot rods. He said as long as it was flat he could cut it.

My only regret was that when they removed the old glass there was some rust on the bottom of the frame. All i had time to do was wire brush it and use compressed air to blow the scraped off rust away. Would have liked to prep it a little better and at least prime it. Anyway the new glass looks good and it seems to have a little more tint to it which I'm good with. I still have to put the wiper motor cover back on.

    Here's the before.

So I thought I was going to try to do something simple to the CJ6, but Murphy's Law decided to strike. I am replacing the transmission and transfer case boots along with painting the metal transmission cover. The knob for the transfer case came of easy enough, but the knob for the transmission seemed to be rusted and wouldn't come off. I tried some large pliers in an attempt to remove the knob, but couldn't get a sufficient grip. I decided to use my Dremel and cut one side of the knob off and then use vice grips to remove the knob. Well instead of the knob coming off the threaded portion of the shift cane sheared off. I tried using a die to rethread what remained, but didn't have any luck with that. Maybe a better quality die would work? I spent a little time last night searching for a replacement shifter cane, but didn't come up with anything.
Anyone have advice? BTW it's a Borg Warner T14 transmission.

not much help here but I had the same problem. I wound up cutting the nub off flush, then drilling out the center and taping it for 1/4 x 20, which is what my shifter was, and putting in a piece of threaded rod. fixed it nicely.

Since the shift knob is broken, I think you should just sell me the Jeep at a loss. :twist:
