Varg In Jeep's Clothing

When i ordered my reprogrammed ECM for my 4.3 this was an option I requested. My 4.3 uses a throttle cable , so I don't really know what the mechanism for this is. Im sure its whatever is used for cruise control.

 

Mike ( Boyink) had a switch on the dash of his CJ6 that he wired up to take advantage of that. If I recall correctly he had it labeled "idle up".

 

You guys think I’m kidding when I say I’m just fudging my way through this.

The ECM/PCM probably just sends a signal to your IAC to change the idle speed.

 

I like them specifically because I don’t have to know how they work for them to make it 1,000,000 miles!

 

Ok, I found some info in this pdf.

"The control unit receives a signal from the AC control when the AC is turned on or off to enable it to adjust the idle valve. Signals are also sent to the control unit from the AC compressor so that the idle valve can be adjusted each time the compressor turns on or off."

 

I spent the morning building speaker boxes out of some 3/8” baltic birch plywood, staining them black and spraying them...



I got them mounted and put the seats back in...



...just to find one of the speakers’ woofer doesn’t work. I pulled it back apart and found out why.

I attached the dash tag this morning. The cage covered two of the holes, so I had to move it over a little and drill new ones.



One of my concerns with this was justified the other day when I was trying out the 4WD. The carrier bearing in the front driveshaft is from a Volvo car. The bearing is mounted in a big floppy rubber bushing. They were always problems, and nobody ever made a decent permanent fix. I could see the front driveshaft through the t-case shifter hole, and it was flopping around like a fish out of water whenever there was any load on that shaft.

I dug my spare out of storage, and that one was in even worse shape. I pulled on it a little and...



I pressed the bearing out of the core, and I removed the remaining rubber from the ring the only suitable way.



Cow mat saves the day once again! I got to work carving a bearing sandwich out of cow mat.



New on left, old on right. No more floppy flop.

 

It’s a 2-pc shaft. The carrier fits inside the crossmember at those two recessed bolts.

 

That looks a little dusty on the bottom. Could you work on that?

 

The bearing is called a "center support bering". That thin rubber on your original is designed to dampen the driveshaft so you don't feel any vibration inherent with the change of angle. Not a consideration in a Jeep.

Even in its proper environment, the rubber would soften and sag after a few years, and the driveshaft “thump” against the floorboards would return. I lost track of how many of them I’ve bought and replaced. The forums are still full of inquiries about this issue. I’m really surprised the aftermarket hasn’t stepped up and produced something better.
