Looks like you could use a resurface job on that flywheel. Those hardened spots will make your new clutch grab. just a light resurface will make a world of difference how smooth the clutch operates.

Took 2 afternoons to get 4 weeks of Colorado dirt (mostly) off the Jeep.
New spring is coming. Along with new shocks and wheel spacers.

Nothing like Alabama Red clay there in Colorado. Just lots of dirt everywhere.

Engine out. Frame cleanup and spray tomorrow. Also dug up part of the backyard to find a water leak.

Holley TA470 and I divorced this morning. I had a 390 here that I went through and looked good. After setting the fuel bowls and some tinkering with the vacuum gauge I'm happy to report this leaner sister is a keeper! Had it up to 40 in front of the house :D on the road. Crisp throttle with no bog or dead spot. Coasting in third mashed it and got a chirp! Almost grabbed 4th but those dry rotted squirrelly 33's stuck in the back of my head...I don't think the ta is a bad carb. I'm sure with further tinkering it could be sorted out. I just don't want to invest more in it or have the patience for it. I'm going to get spring loaded seats for the 390 bowls and fab a crossover vent tube and call it done.

Oh I installed 6° caster shims up front, torqued the u bolts and cut them off.

Here's the same #1 after running with the 390. The 390 has 51 jets factory and a 6.5 power valve. I call it just about spot on.

The ta470 after I changed the factory 57's to 54's and the power valve from factory 2.5 to 6.5. Note I didn't change anything ignition related when I installed the 390.

New oil pan gasket today. It has wept from day one. Snugging the bolts didn't help. It's a peeve of mine, I detest the use of cork gaskets and rtv. It now wears cork and #2 Permatex. Also got a premature oil change due to this. Rotella 10w-30 and Napa gold filter.

Bad wind today, the Jeep stays in the barn, as we do. Retired.
Yesterday I forgot to turn the contact key OFF and the battery went empty, so refill.
Maybe I should buy a new battery, it works but the charger said thatit was not perfect.
Tomorrow, better weather, temp around 82° F; the Jeep will bring some glasses and papers to the waste box, and with my son we'll go to the place where he was with his brother on bicycle, to see some mysteries, and bring some doc to our mason.
    Life goes on.

Changed the jets back for sea level. Sort of...
The carb always ran kind of rich, I put 49 jets in instead of the 52s that were stock. We had 47s in for Colorado.

    All done.

Flat towed it a total of 224 miles ,to hit a couple of trails in southern Colorado. For 19 summers now, the ol F250 has been dragging this CJ through the mountains. I'm sure the Jeep has traveled far more miles powered by Ford V8 than by Buick V6....

In other news, my back survived the day pretty well....

Doug - What trails did you run down south? I haven't been down there much with the jeep. Medano is on my list....

Thats one of my favorites. Easy for the most part, but there's a bunch of water crossings that can be deep in the spring. The challenge in an early CJ is you can never get the brakes dry before they get wet again!
The fun part is, you come into the back side of the Sand Dunes, away from the crowds.
