I did what Donny did, but with the floor plate off. Good luck.

I second the bucket with a pump. The boy has been changing parts like every three weeks for a year now, have to have a five gallon bucket to keep up.

I don't see that anyone has yet mentioned to use GL-4 (difficult to find), not GL-5 (easy to find). So, I'll mention.

I had always used the little quart bottles on my old chevy truck, but after seeing the lack of room I had to work with under the jeep, I bought one of those pumps that screws into the gallon jug. That was one of the best purchases of my life. I can't believe I've been wrenching on cars for 20 years and just found that.

In the marine world is a gear oil pump for filling lower units that is air powered much like a bug sprayer. Fill it with oil of choice, pump the handle, open the valve and before you know it oil is spilling on the garage floor.

    I second that emotion.

Not easy to find over the counter, but available from amazon.

I'm about to do this on my (new to me) 64 CJ5. Can I remove the skid plate and the frame crossmember under the transmission for access? Don't want things to fall apart so I was wondering what will happen if I remove the crossmember... this would make cleaning and filling easy

You'll need to support the transmission and transfer case with something if you do that. Sounds like unnecessary complications to me.
