How much foot room does the Extreme front hoop take up? Does the floor plate tuck under the dash, or sit fully in the door opening? Also, do you know if their DOM option uses smaller tubing, or is it all 2"?

Not sure about the DOM option. The hoop definitely has proper bends to get the foot out of the way, under the dash. I have not driven with it but While it was going together I did climb in and out several times. Seems like it may make getting in and out easier having this to grab. Just got a coat of paint on it last night.

The YJ conversation hanger mounts over the original hanger. It appears that original was a bit wonkie.

Another little modification done this week. I wanted to be able to fold the windshield down and keep the top in place.

I added some snaps to the front of the soft top. I was careful to have the snaps fall between the front edge of the windshield frame and the top of the channel. wanted it to all looked smooth there.

Great tool I borrowed from my friend who does reupholstery .

Next I marked the roll bar drilled small holes and added the other end of the snaps. The end result isn't perfectly held back and there are some humps in the fabric - the top just wasn't designed to do this so "it is what it is".

The windshield can go back up for a quick shower or dusty area. I wouldn't drive at Hwy speed with the top snapped to the roll bar as I don't think it would stay in place but for up to 20mph on a trail I think it should be fine.

Make sure your gauges and such on the dash can take the rain/hail... We get some real gushers in the summertime up in the Mts.

I've been above my ankles in rain/hail sitting in a VERY cold soup of a seat before - more times than I care to count  - things get REAL cold and wet in those storms on trails.

I was up in a campground around Twin Lakes (Buena Vista) three years ago, when a hail storm dropped temps into the 30s in the middle of the afternoon in July.

Over Cottonwood from Buene into the north end of Taylor Park is always where we go.. at least since the late 60's. Almost to the old town of Bowman but after the last camp ground. We hit Taylor Pass, Tellurium, Cement Creek, Pie Plant, and used to hit several others like Eyre Creek until they were closed down.

We were all the way up Tellurium Creek and got hit without the bikini top - so say my nutz were floating in icy rain/hail for an hour would be an understatement. Suspension seats just 'hold' things there...

    Althea Update

4 weeks of wheeling in Colorado this summer revealed some needed improvements to my Jeep. Some big items and some small items that are more like maintenance. Some of this stuff I already posted on the “What did you do to your Jeep today?” thread. I wanted to get it all in one spot for my own future reference.

Here are the big three that I’ll try to complete over the next 8 or 9 months (before Rubicon 2021).

    1. Granny gear 4 speed transmission swap. While in Colorado I picked up a Ford T18 from ECJ5 member Warlock. I’m about to pull the trigger on the Novak adaptor kit and Misc parts (will be well over $600).

    2. Hanging Pedals with hydraulic clutch and dual MC. The brakes on my CJ worked well. I have a D30 with Disc Brakes already in the front and swapped a Herm kit Dual MC in during the build. Biggest issue with the brakes is the shoddy workmanship (My own) on the brake lines. Just about every connection to the proportioning valve leaks to some degree. I could redo these lines but the Hydraulic clutch is the thing I really need. Currently I have the AA chain linkage for the clutch. This linkage works great and is very smooth for normal driving. BUT when I got a bit twisted in a tough spot the clutch sometimes was completely gone. I’m still weighing the pros and cons between YJ and Winwood pedals. This swap/mod isn’t as simple as I thought.

    3. TBI. Probably the last of the major items I’ll get done. I’m technically challenged when it comes to this stuff. I’m looking at Holly Sniper and FAST EZefi.

So here we go with the progress I have made so far….

I got home last week and washed the Jeep (took 2 evenings) then drove into the garage and took the wheels off.

First big problem is a broken leaf spring. I have YJ 2.5" lift springs on the jeep. I ordered one right away but got a message yesterday they are out of stock and will be a week+ before 4WD gets them in.

I had origionally put the front shocks on upside down (fit much better) and didnt think it would hurt. I think I ruined both cheap shocks in CO as the last couple days it felt like there were no shocks.

I also definitely blew up one of my rear shocks. There was much oil and dirt all over the shock and non functioning when I removed it.

Ordered new Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks (not cheap this time) for the front. I had a set of Rough Country shocks for the rear already ordered and ready to install at home.

Last week I also changed out the carb jets for sea level tuning. The Rochester always ran rich with.052 jets so I put in .049 and will see how that does. Had .047 jets in for the Colorado trip.

A of couple additional Jobs I did last week.

Changed out a leaking front pinion seal.

The just fine rear seal starting pouring oil out the very next day.

Made another adjustment (drilled a hole) to the AA clutch linkage. I'm pretty sure I broke the code on the very sensitive clutch you end up with when you install the AA linkage. If you have this problem deffintly check out this thread...
    Overly Sensitive Clutch

Tonight i have to make some modifications to the front upper shock mounts. Stand by for that.

You can see on the previous picture the top of the shock lined up with the wrong side of the mount. I considered cutting the whole mount off, switching sides and welding it all back together. Then I tried to just remove the round threaded part- didn’t budge. Then I decided I could just shawack the square tubes in half, flip the mount and weld it back together. That took a couple hours ‘cause I had to remove the right side fender. It all turned out good and fairly straight for the effort I put in it.

Which YJ springs were you running that broke? Looks like OME. I like my OME springs, but haven't used them off road yet. I'm also running a shackle reversal so the dynamics are a little different.

Are the new Rancho shocks a special length for the YJ springs?
