The flange alone on the new bolts it larger than the head on the original bolts giving them an even larger bearing surface. I really don't see the point of the washers, unless its an ARP thing....

Reduces friction during torqueing the bolt allowing more accurate stretch of the bolt. Check the length of the new bolts. Sometimes they are manufactured slightly longer to compensate for the thickness of the washer.

Do some quick measurements of depth (dry fit)... If I remember, it's 1.5 times the diam of the bolt in thread engagement to be fine. So 1/2" bolt needs 3/4" engagement for full strength. You may want to verify it, my net access is limited at the moment.

Bolted the heads up with the washers, I figured they came with the bolts for a reason. Only time will tell now...

Buick V6 198 and 225 fireball cylinder head bolts

I used these as well. ARP says the washers are The Most Important Thing In The World and have Specific Recommendations of where to apply their Magical Grease. I went ahead and did what they say because I'm a rule follower.

    EDIT P.S. I didn't replace mine, I just didn't have any!

I have an ARP head stud kit for a Buick 215 V8. They're the same lengths used on the 225, only you get a few extra pieces. The ARP number is 124-4003.

I have used ARP products on several different applications. If you go to there web site they list all the open stock sizes and then you can make up what you need.Main reason for washers is on aluminum heads to not crush the softer aluminum around the bolt hole. I did use ARP head bolts on my 427 FE FORD after I snapped a old stock bolt and could feel others turning and not tightening.New bolts torqued down like a dream.Fun to see all the fasteners they have on there site. mike

The 198 V-6 used 11 head bolts vs 8 for the dauntless engine so maybe they just give you extra bolts to cover the difference. Not sure about length difference either. mike
