Which Hub Would You Use?

    So the original(?) front axle on my 61 has the big hole drum with the hub separate behind it. Warn Lock o Matic hubs. The drums themselves are pretty worn. I thought to use the good drums from one of the other D27's I have here, but one has small hole with the hub integrated to the drum, no manual lockers, and the other has the hub and drum integrated, but has IH Lock o Matic manual hubs, which look the same inside as the Warn units, but appear to be aluminum. Should I just buy new, big hole drums, since brake maintenance is so much easier with them, or is there any advantage to the integrated hub-drum units?

    11" drum upgrade or just replace what you've got. No sense in a lateral swap to save a buck for a headache.

    I agree, keep the big hole drums unless you want to upgrade, the ease of maintenance is worth it for a do it yourself-er!

    Your '61 should have 9" drums. Most D27 axles had 10" drums. Do you have both 9" and 10" setups, or is everything 9" I have only seen the integrated hub/drum assembly in 10" brakes. The drums are swedged on via the 5 lug studs.
    Warn Lock-o-Matics should all interchange around as long as they are 10 spline, IH or otherwise.
    All Lock-o's should have a heavy steel body that goes against the hub, and the outer section with the dial is alloy.
    Warn manual hubs have both the inner body and the outer dial cap made of aluminum.
    With the Lock-o-Matics, you must have the drag nut that goes in place of the second locking nut on the spindle, as well as the special washer with all the holes in them. Do any of your setups have this? The Lock-o's must have this special smooth spindle "nut" that locks into the special washer with a very small allen set screw. There are friction clutches that ride on the drag nut that cause the hubs to engage. These drag nuts are often left out, and the Warn hubs don't function without all the proper parts. With Lock-o-Matics, they only can have "lock" or "free" selected. "Lock" manually locks them, and "free" makes them engage when the front driveshaft has power, ie in 4WD. You either have Warn manual locking hubs, or you have Lock-o-Matics. They are two entirely different type of lockout hubs.

    They say Warn, and they say Lock o matic. There's also a bunch of them on ebay for sale.
