My 82 j10, has a Giant heater box and fan on the pas side under hood.
Headers and plug change and VC removal are $%&#÷.
Would like to rip it all out and replace with (?), maby a universal from summit, or
    A junk yard one.
Anyone done this. On a full size jeep?

Are you talking about an A/C evaporator box? or is it strictly a heater box?

The heater box gets in the way of many engine swaps too. You can buy units like this one GEN IV MAGNUM Universal Fit Systems - Vintage Air that include heat and AC. This one is said to fit under the dash well. Search for AC conversion on ifsja.org or fsjnetwork.com

Yes, it had factory AC. I won't. Can I just remove the under hood part, and fab a cover
And still use the heat part?
    Thanks

The heater core is in the box under the hood. Realize that the FSJ engine compartment was designed for the 230 cid OHC six, and V8s don't fit very well. There's miles of room between the heater box and the engine with an inline 6. The AC is completely separate from the heater and under the dash. They don't share anything - not blowers, not ducting, not controls, nothing.

The wires going into the heater box are for the blower motor speed reduction resistor. The heat from the resistor goes into the heated air for the cabin. I thought that wuz kind of neat. I expect today they instead make multi-speed motors with boost and buck field windings, like the 2-speed wiper motor. Or an external chopper with an SCR - some kind of PWM speed control that makes less heat than a resistor. This would make sense when the heat and AC share ducting.

You won't what? Use the AC?

You could remove the AC and fit a Mojave heater, like used in a CJ. Then you could remove the under-hood box.

All AC parts gone, even the under dash vents. It ant worth it in a farm truck.
    What is a Mojave heater?

Several years ago I owned a pickup truck with a blower motor speed reduction resistor in the heater box. leaves, trash, ect had unknowingly built up in there and suddenly caught fire. There was smoke pouring into the cab from the dash vents, 10 seconds later fire and flames were coming out. WTH . My wife grabbed her purse and bailed out :censored: as I pulled off the road. lucky we were right in front of someones house, there was a garden hose close by. We sprayed water in the dash vents and extinguished it. We saved the truck but the heater box was toast.

When the engine comes out, I'll mess with it and decide.
    Those summit heaters look nice!
They do go inside the cab, right? Then hoses through firewall?
And I could still hook up defrost function?
