Anyone know how to unlock an early cj5 (1961) glove box latch. Don't have key! Latch seems in good shape but was locked when I got it. Any trick to picking the lock and making a key for it. Who sell the early locks or where can you get one if this can't be unlocked?

These locks are relatively simple. I've had ignition locks that could be operated with a small jackknife.

You could try tickling it with any old key that fits, or a thin tool. Rake it in and out while applying very slight pressure turning the cyllinder. Might get lucky.

Another way would be to depress the spring latch at the top-inside of the door, if you can figure a way to get a tool into it. Possibly from the rear?

What’s the condition of the glove box box? Could open easily from access underneath if you were going to replace a damaged worn fibre glove box.

I would check that you can't unscrew the hinges from the bottom of the dash - then the whole door would come off. I don't recall whether you can reach the screws without destroying the glove box though...

Anyway, if it's keyed, you'll need to see a locksmith to have a key made. I'm sure they would make quick work of it, on the Jeep or not. It's not keyed the same as the ignition?

Mine unlocks with the ignition key 1958 cj5, I thought it would be a separate key but someone was thinking!

Here's what mine looks like not original but functional. The grooves don't matter that I know of. Looks like a Briggs and Stratton key with one notch.

I agree with Beachbum, I made a new box for my Jeep out of aluminum, made it longer, almost to the fire wall. It gives you more room for your stuff. Good Luck
