What is the correct tailgate for a 1969 CJ5? The oem parts book I have shows it as the tailgate with the big Jeep logo stamped across the back. The one that's on the Jeep now, has a small rectangle where the Willys logo was in earlier years and looks like what was on the M38A1. I'm not sure if it's the original or not.

    Thanks!

Really? What year was the change? '69 is pretty late.

My '71 came to me with a fiberglass replacement tailgate so, I can't say for sure but, it certainly seems, from this thread that mid '70 at the earliest would be the change over date. That's what I'm seeing anyway.

I thought we've discussed this here before. Maybe too long ago.??

My 71 Tailgate has "Jeep" on it, but is hid by my Tux License Plate holder. Don't tell anyone.

This page on the history of CJ tailgates is interesting, though also confusing. According to the "Spotter's Guide", the 1971 model year, which began in mid-1970 shortly after AMC purchased Jeep from Kaiser, is the time frame when the Jeep logo first appeared on the tailgates. However, further down the page under "So Long, Willys", it indicates that this change occurred in 1969, before the end of the Kaiser era. Obviously both can't be correct.
