Once we were able to get the hanger back under the frame and strap it tight I was able to drive it to pavement and tow it home. I thought I broke an axle or hub because of the terrible grinding/binding noises. Turns out the front driveshaft "self cleranced" the oil pan making the noise.

Spent the afternoon pulling apart old fuel pumps & building pullers to get the valves out of them. Started mounting the flywheel to the crank & stripped out a 3/8" nut which oddly enough I can't find a replacement for in the whole &(^$&# garage.

Yeah, that's a tough break, but totally repairable. Your strap down job looks quite adequate for an off-of-the-road fix!

Luckily for me, all I had to do to my CJ was change the oil and filter. Running much nicer with fresh oil!

Throw a dozen welding rods in your field tool kit, a pair of welding goggles, and a set of jumper cables. With a second battery (never wheel alone) and some home made jumpers, you'll have a 24V welding set up that would have let you repair that in the field. The whole kit weighs about 3 lbs.

It was just a quick trip for an upcoming Club event. I have dual batteries so your field fix idea is a good idea.

Well, the recent oil change was not enough. Went to leave work last night and battery has not the amps to turn over the starter.
Needless to stay, after another jump start this morning, I'm waiting on the new battery to arrive from the battery shop.
The best part is, I did get my money's worth out of it. 4 / 12 was the date code - 2 months shy of getting 8 years outta that battery! Think it came with the Jeep 6 winters ago.....

The only thing I can do to my 1969 CJ5 V6 is miss it-and I still do. Still own it but it is sitting indoors in Salinas, CA. stripped of almost everything that unbolts or lifts off. Someday... WestCoastPat

I had an extra 2m antenna and decided to install it on my jeep. In the area I ride. there's a 2m repeater on top of Goose Peak:

I drilled and tapped the rear bumper and mounted the antenna. I threaded the coax under the frame and up through the locking box between the front seats.

My wife and I took the jeep out to see if we could reach the repeater.

We "reached it" metaphorically by radio waves. We had to get out in the jeep in order to get Goose Peak in "line of site" for the 2m radio signal to reach the repeater at the top of the mountain. Goose Peak is probably buried under 10' of snow right now.

I called the machine shop to see how it is going. I am itching to start assembling the Dauntless. He said not much longer. Seems like a good machinist, not in a hurry, methodical. I guess this counts for what I did to my Jeep today.

This past weekend we went out to Ocotillo Wells again. The lack of a functional fuel gauge bit me in the a**. I had "filled it up" before the trip, but apparently it clicked off way before being full. It clicked off multiple times after that and I assumed it was full. But out on the trail it suddenly sputtered to a stop, fortunately in a wash with lots of traffic. Fortunately a flock of JKs? gaggle of JKs? herd of JKs? happened by and sold me 5 gallons.

Returning home I finally figured out how to hold the pump handle to get it to not click off. This time I filled it till it was lapping out the fill tube. I have metered the sending unit and know its functioning properly, and the wiring is brand new and tested, so I ordered an Autometer gauge to install. Plus I'll mount a spare gas can on the tire carrier.

    What I did FOR our Jeep;
On our trip to Ocotillo Wells last month I was ogling the toy haulers and wondering if my little CJ would fit in one. Lady Shadetree and I went on a quest to find a toy hauler of just the right size, and towed a used one home last Thursday evening. We left on Friday afternoon for Ocotillo Wells with the Jeep snugly stored inside. After flat towing and van camping for years, we were marveling over the living space we had, and the convenience of a real toilet and shower.

Have been using a toy hauler for years. The older I get the more often I enjoy the conveience of the private toilet---sometimes four or five times a night if the beer has been flowing.

Still working on my daughters Escalade swapping motors. BUT
I thought I would do a little project on the Jeep. Preparing for my April SoCal trip, I decided to remove the rear seat. On the last 15 trips I have used the rear seat once. Behind the seat is my recovery gear, jumper cables, snatch block, shackle, tree strap and 2" receiver shackle.

    Seat removed

    And new storage installed

I have lived in the Dauntless to T18 clutch hell for several weeks. Countless hours of measuring, clearance checking, calculations, etc. Third slave cylinder bracket was the final version. It boils down to if you are using a hydraulic slave you cannot exceed a 2:1 clutch fork ratio. Almost all slaves have around 1.25 max travel and it takes about 5/8" to get throwout with air gap to properly operate the 10.5" GM clutch. I finally resorted to a run of the mill Luk clutch and pressure plate. No amount of voodoo could get my centerforce to operate properly. Seriously it kept me up at night and 3 days ago I just about dragged out the Commando 400 and went slush box.
The aha moment came after fishing out the Wagoneer bellhousing and clutch fork that donated the T18. That fork was way shorter than the GM fork. Mechanical/ cable setups are far more forgiving in the amount of fork travel you can get. Hydraulics require a tighter window.
