We had talked about this years ago Rick, when I had asked about the VIN tag on my Jeep :)

I remember, I was surprised that they were out on with screws, after I spent all that time finding rivets, so it would look stock. Oh Well.

If it's like the CJ (I presume it is), it will be stamped into the frame in the top rail, near the front passenger side shock mount. Could be hard to find.

So what about replacing a tub? Do you have to go to the DMV and show ownership and they move the vin tag? How about fiberglass tubs that are way to thick to do this? How do they move the vin tags? How should we attach a vin tag to a glass tub?

I would make sure you have appropriate ownership documents on the replacement tub (new or used). Usually that is a bill of sale on the replacement tub since it is not a complete vehicle. It can also be a title if you source the tub from another vehicle. With ownership of the old vehicle and ownership of the replacement tub it would be prudent to contact your DMV/DOR for VIN inspection instructions and correcting the title with the vin that is on the complete project you are trying to title.

Swapping a body is becoming less and less common than it used to be because of unibody cars. DMV/DOR offices (mine included) are becoming less proficient in processing those transactions. Then people like me get old and retire. I still get calls which makes me feel needed. LOL

We have discussed many aspects of Jeep ownership on these pages, past, present and probably into the future. I believe the only thing that can be said with any certainty is that Jeep production is UNCERTAIN. I have come to the conclusion that may Jeeps were constructed with whatever parts were available at the moment they were assembled. I;e; If it fit, it went on the vehicle, period correct or not. Jeep dealerships were known to register Jeeps in the year they were sold, not necessarily in the year they were produced. Good luck to all!

If change out vin tag, I would say nothing about it. In Kentucky there is NO moving a vin tag to another vehicle, even if you have receipts. I feel with old vehicle they do not worry to much about it.

There are a couple Ford plants in Louisville. I have heard they keep close track of the rivets used on vin plates. If they see one laying on the floor somebody hears about it.

Thanks for the info on frame location as I looked for it just behind motor mount and didn’t see anything. So it should match the firewall tags whole number? Craig

It should match the sequential part of the VIN, the actual serial number. Not the whole VIN, just the trailing number part that changes with each Jeep.

they do not match. The tag number is 32000 and the frame says 11614. Is there any way to find out what year of production from that number?

You're in the wrong forum. The Jeepster forum has a thread with serial numbers that my help you to narrow down the production date. Jeepster VIN Numbers Other components like axles and maybe engine have a production date code that should precede the build date by a short time.

Interesting thread. My 64 has and 66 had screws. My 70 and 71 have the rivets. They look to be standard round steel rivets - not GM style rosette rivets.
