Guys, I know this has been talked about a lot, so sorry for bringing this back. I am trying to install a late model tank in the rear of my 62 CJ5. I already cut the v braces but I would like to see some pictures about how to mount the tank. Every time I've searched the forum people refer to the boyink link, but it does not work. I would really appreciate some visual aid or detailed steps on how to mount the tank. Thanks!

I used an intermediate 71-75 tank which mounts differently...but maybe this will help...have to scroll down a few posts:

I'm not sure how much these will help, it's hard to get a picture once the tank is installed.
My tank sits on the skid plate which bolts the rear crossmember and the one behind the rear axle. (please excuse my mud n crud this is a play Jeep not a show Jeep)

Edit: if you are running the factory drawbar, it'll have to be swapped out for the 70-75 style.

My jeep will not see any trails ever. It is a city boy. Do I need a skid plate or can I mount it by itself to the frame?

I believe the 78 and up mounts to the skid and then the skid becomes your attachment point. The other vintages might have a different mounting solution that excludes the skid

My 71, the tank has 3 mounting points and the skid plate mounts separately.

Using the skid plate makes the installation much easier, IMHO.

Close. '76 and up mounts to the skid plate, thus requiring the skid plate. A '70ish-75 steel tank can be hung from the frame and not require a skid plate. You'd still need to fab the brackets. Note any plastic aftermarket tank must be supported from underneath by a skid plate.

JMO - if you are not working on a '70ish-75 Jeep, the '76 or later style tank with a skid plate will be easier to install overall. Note the '76-77 and '78-on tanks are slightly different, but both mount to the skid plate. You can look at the pictures on the MTS site MTS COMPANY, L.C. - Jeep CJ/YJ Gas Tanks as an example of the tanks. Note that MTS makes some errors in the year ranges for these tanks - some '70s and all '71s and '72s came with the under-floor rear tank that continued through 1975. The under-seat tanks ended in mid-1970.

Here's the skid plate bolted to the frame no tank. I welded the nuts to the frame, makes it lots easier to remove and reinstall.

You can buy the later type aftermarket.

    Just an example.
77 1977 Jeep CJ5 Lower Engine Cover - Body Sheet Metal - Crown Automotive, Omix-Ada, Performance Accessories, Fuel Tank, Leaf Spring Axle U-Bolt - Rear - PartsGeek

The '70ish-75 skid plate is different, using separate brackets to secure it to the frame, and may not be compatible with the later tanks. And the earlier tanks may not be compatible with the later skid plates. Suggest you pick a year and source all parts from that year if you can. The '78 or later style seems to be most widely available.

Does that have a lining material? The ones I've seen have nothing like that.

Barney Jeep sells everything you need to install a rear tank. He has the hoses and fittings to put the filler at the rear of the Jeep. Tank with skid plate

There is a smallish piece of plastic in the install but not a liner.

Not to hijack, but are you intentionally running two different length shackles in the rear?
