Today I assembled my two backing plates, etc. All of the hardware has been DIY replated in zinc or zinc with yellow chromate (experimenting). New shoes. New wheel cylinders.

My issue is that I needed to get a lot of new hardware and my Jeep was missing all the self adjusting hardware for the fronts. Also, it seems the backing plates were mixed up on the vehicle. So, I had to mix and match and come up with what I think is a correctly assembled brakes.

In any case, here's what I did so far. Would you folks be so kind and check my work? Please confirm:
    1) That these are both left side brakes (the left one has a rear wheel cylinder BTW)
    2) That the primary and secondary shoes aren't mixed up. For this I went by the FSM.

In the pics, the shoe with the smaller lining is on the left and according to FSM is the primary shoe which I believe goes towards the front of the Jeep.

I haven't done drum brakes in 20 years!

Let's see if my image appears...

Here are the 10" rear brakes from my 71 to compare (the driver side is on the right of my picture - not sure why I did that).... EDIT - I see that you have 1 front and 1 rear brake both from the driver side - so YES it should be good to go....and yes, the front shoe is the shorter shoe - so for your pics that would be the left side.

Also make sure both your star-wheel adjusters are right hand (normal) thread since these are for the left side of the Jeep. The right side star-wheel adjusters should be a reversed thread. When the actuator pushes down on the star-wheel, the adjuster needs to get longer.

Where, in the name of deep fried twinkies, did you find the self adjusters? I went crazy and still couldn't get em.

which part of the self adjuster are you referring? The star wheel device can be had from NAPA. The spring loaded locking device and pull rods are not available from FLAPS that I found...had to repair and reuse.

Welcome from Michigan. I am doing a set of 11" front brakes for my Jeep, I had my backing plates stripped , on the back of the backing plate I noticed they are marked with an R and L before the part number. You may not be able to see it, I didn't notice it until they were stripped, but mine are marked. Hope this helps. Your pictures are worth a 1,000 words, Thanks. Good Luck

I wonder if the star adjuster is dependent upon brake size. I just (long story) changed out my front axle and went from 10 inch drums to 11 inchers, and in the 11 inch self adjuster hardware kit, you get new stars. Finding ones that play well with the 10 inch shoes? Idunno.

My issue was that the star was there, as was the little pivots. It was the struts in mine that were gone. When I put new shoes on, I kept the thingie that clips onto the bottom of the shoe and the pivot/screw and put 'em in a labelled baggie. The star adjuster, of course, had to go back into place for the brakes to work

As for FLAPS - I've seen the acronym but can't find a proper definition for it. And the ones I've seen are not Jeep appropriate...

FLAPS = friendly local auto parts store...
As for 10" vs 11"...I run 11" on the front and 10" on the rear. Got The complete rebuild kit with all small parts, drums and shoes for 11" at Napa...the 10" stuff was harder to find. Was able to get quite a bit of small parts from NAPA but not all of it.

The star wheels were salavagable and were just taken from the brakes on the Jeep. The reset of the self adjusting parts I got used after calling around from 11" brake setups. The outfit I spoke with managed to scrounge up enough parts from his junk bin... The outfit is in Washington state and begins with a "W." I being coy because I'm not sure what the rules are about referring to vendors.

Yup. That's how I have them: the lever pushes down and they get longer. The mystery now is that the star wheels are marked with an "R" but the thingamajig that ties the two rods together is marked with an L. Both on brakes setup from the same side. Makes me wonder if there's still something I have set up wrong... Those thingamajigs can only go one way as the two rods are of different diameters and the rods can only go into the holes one way. If I spin the thingamajig around so as to use one marked "R", then the rods are too short.

Mine are OEM and are not marked L or R. They are marked with a Lockheed Wagner logo and have an "FF-XXXXX" part number on them (R and L have different numbers). After I beaded the heck out of them to remove all the rust and old junk, the numbers are clearly visible.

Mr. Lockman: I have the 11 inch stuff. That's all commonly found. What I am looking for are the two struts and the swivel for the 10 inch brakes :D

    Thanks for that update, Jeff
Wasn't exactly clear in which you were having a hard time finding. Good luck in your search, as you most likely have checked all the vendor's that I can suggest, like Kaiser-Willy's Parts ?

I don't have much experience with the 10" brakes, but the operation of the self-adjusters on the 10" and 11" brakes is basically the same. The rods or cable goes to the rear of the Jeep in all cases. When you pull on the cable or rods (squeeze the cable or rod between your thumb and the brake shoes) and the adjusting lever climbs the star wheel on the adjuster. Release and the lever returns, turning the adjuster. This action must lengthen the adjuster screw - if it does not, you have the screw on the wrong slide (left or right of the Jeep). The adjusters will also fail (loosening) if you have the adjuster assembled backwards, with the cable or rod to the front of the Jeep.

Having read about half a dozen threads regarding 10" rear drums, I was more confused than ever! Just checked the factory service manual (SM-1046) which covers 1966-1971 CJ5 & CJ5 models. The rear brakes are configured backwards from what common sense and experience would dictate. Quote from the manual: "On vehicles equipped with self-adjusting brake assemblies, self-adjustment of the front wheel brakes takes place during reverse wheel brake application and the rear wheel brake adjustment takes place during forward vehicle brake application." I wonder why Jeep engineers decided to arrange the rear brakes bass-ackwards??? So what this means is that the right front brake looks identical to the left rear brake, and the left front brake is identical to the right rear brake. Sounds crazy, right?

Ive been searching all over the internet the last few days on 10" self adjusters. Ive got front and rear axles from a 71 CJ5 going in my CJ2A project. The front set had the self adjusters on it and were configured like normal where the adjusting rods and long shoe are towards the rear. The self adjusting hardware was missing from the rear but the clips and adjusting wheels where still there. The rear setup in mine was configured where the star wheel and self adjusting hardware along with the long shoe was facing forwards. Completely backwards from what I thought would be correct. Im going to take apart a set of axles on a 69 junker I have to see if I can salvage enough self adjusting hardware to get the rears back going. Unless someone says bad idea, i was going to swap the left and right backing plates on the rear before I put the wheel bearings on the axles and configure the self adjusters to the rear.

Having not read the manual, I swapped mine side to side so the rears work in when stopping reverse like every other car I've worked on. Not really feeling motivated to switch them back.
