Yeah, the day I drove off the lot in my new cj5 as a teenager back in may 1974, is a close second. Man I was on top of the world. The Jeep bug got me and there is no cure I still have it!

I pulled the bellhousing and input bearing retainer off my SM465 to find my leak. Found it, the gasket behind the cut down retainer was so thin around the bolts it just failed. I picked up another retainer and am having the bellhousing bored out to accept it this time, to allow for more gasket surface area. I almost put in a SBC, but looking back at all the camping trips and such that the little Dauntless hauled us around on, I'm sticking with it, as evidenced by the parts at the machine shop now. I was waffling between Egge and Sealed power pistons. I almost went with the Egge, from TA Performance, but I tow the camper a lot, and the compression may be a bit much. It needs to be able to run on 87 without pinging no matter what, so I ordered Sealed Power pistons. I then got a notice they were back ordered. I then ordered KB/Sil-Vo-Lites. Hopefully I'm not disappointed.

That is too cool. That young man is so proud of that truck, what a great project.

OK, so the Jeep projects got shelved for a little while. With the passing of my dad, junk got stored in my shop.
Had to move mom to another phase of the assisted living go through all the stuff.
Cleaned off shipping blankets, boxes, and kitchen chairs off the 64 CJ5 frame.
    Got to:
work on driver's side hat channels, floor pan, and then tool box installation on 64 CJ5. (may use rectangular tubing)
work on brakes and stuck clutch on re-painted frame for 64
work on replacing rear main seal on 64
patch weak spots on rear floor riser on 64
    get the body back on
And when and if I get it running, then:
weld in patch panels on M38A1
    finish working hood on M38A1
weld in tool box floor on M38A1
Need to get one done and then work on the next one. The M38A1 is a tribute to my dad, so I was rushing to get it done.
It needs more work than the 64 CJ, so back to work on the CJ now.
Pay no attention to the Toyota truck waiting for the power steering to be buttoned up, the distributor installed, carb put on, etc.
Just listing all this stuff made me tired.
Need to remember to take pictures to see progress, even if it is slow.
Not much to report but it is progress.

Thanks to everyone for all the motivation and great advice and ideas.
I love this thread, it gets me motivated and gives me great ideas.

Oh yea, and plan time to clean up my tools so I don't have to walk sideways and dig to find the tools.

It is parked in my workshop in the avatar photo. Waiting patiently to be restored and driven. It has been in storage there since about 1990. A bigger photo in the picture posting test thread page 9.

Pulled the CJ out of the garage and did the annual first startup of the new year. I can't believe how great this thing runs? It fires right up (except for the battery, it needed some charging) I'm actually getting a little bored with it.

Made a lot of sparks today....finished removing the front clip of the Willys, and cut off the front shock mounts and the old 4 cylinder engine mounts.

With the shock mount removed I was able to mock up my Scout II steering box....I think it going to do well as far as mounting to the frame and hooking up to the steering linkage but it's going to have a pretty horrible u joint angle at the base of the column.

When you get weary of the short life span of fan controller parts. Notably temp switches that fail in half a dozen cycles.

Brad don't get bored with it. You live in the land of plenty when it comes to places to go wheeling. The jeep is a tool, 4wheeling is the other part of our hobby.

either you got to wheel/drive it more....or I know of a willys wagon that will fill up all your spare time and keep you from being bored

While wheeling recently I realized I hate the spare on the side of the Jeep. At one point the bottom of the spare was dragging on the dirt and I had to back up and take a less desirable line. So I decided to try to find a rear spare tire mount. Amazingly I found one on eBay without the brackets for $20, although shipping was 3 times that. It arrived today. It had a small bend in one of the tubes, but a little adjusting by driving over it with my truck had it straightened up in no time.

Knowing it was going to arrive soon, last night I started welding up the old spare tire mounting holes. Still need a light skim of bondo. I screwed on the new side marker light and shortened the wiring to it.

Tonight I started experimenting with some scrap metal I had to build a mounting bracket. Here's the bracket bolted on. I'm somewhat happy with the design.

On the latch side I still need to figure out what to do.

I couldn't resist throwing the spare up there. Looks like I will need to relocate my license plate and 3rd brake light.

Looks great. I hope you gave the body plenty of reinforcement at the mounts. These things were famous for tearing out the sheet metal.

I was playing around this afternoon and may have a simple solution. But may hit you up if I don’t like it after it’s built.

I had read that. I plan on adding some backing plates. Wondering how the stock hinges mounted? I have bolts on either side of the body seam, and above and below the interior fender well. Structurally that seams pretty strong. Also wondering what all was mounted on the tire mounts that tore? Tire, Hi Lift, and 10 gallons of gas?

Today I bolted together for the first time my T18 and dana 18. This is a huge milestone because I bought all of the parts at least 5 or more years ago, and am finally making headway. It makes such a difference having everything in the garage where i can go put around for an hour at a time!

My dauntless has been at the engine shop for a few months now. I'm not in a huge rush, but I'm ready for it to be done. I think the guy is semi-retired so a bit slow, but supposedly he does good work so that's all I care about.

When I was test driving my '68 project jeep a week or so ago, I slammed on the brakes to see if they'd work. They didn't work very well, but good enough to cause the windshield to slam forward down on the hood. I had forgotten to install the windshield catches on the dash. I found the catches in one of the many bags, in one of the many boxes, of old parts. That was a miracle. Before bolting the hold-downs to the dash, I used a wire wheel in a grinder to remove the old paint.

I was holding one of the clamps with vice grips and wire-wheeling off the paint. One second the clamp was there, the next second it was gone. The spinning wheel had grabbed the piece and flung it somewhere in the garage. I never heard the sound of it falling anywhere or hitting something. I crawled around on the garage floor, moved the compressor, and looked behind the workbench. I asked my wife to come help me find it. She's really good at finding things. I showed her the other clamp. Without moving, she reached to the tray at the back of the workbench and picked up the missing part. I had been looking for 15 minutes, she found it in 15 seconds.

Even in the bracket's lowest position, the windshield clamp was was too loose. This isn't the original windshield to the jeep. The original is a rust basket case. The current replacement windshield is of some unspecified vintage. Perhaps the clamp position on the dash changed. Maybe it's the result of an old seal on the bottom of the windshield.

I ended up using a round file to slot the mounting holes of the bracket so I could slide the bracket down. Now the latches engages more tightly.

One more tiny chip off the iceberg of getting this thing back on the trail.
