Yes and No. light vehicle applications this is true. There were 231 points distributors for marine applications. Both clockwise and counterclockwise applications so you have to be very careful what you are getting if you follow this path. HEI is far superior in almost every way anyway so almost a moot point.

Thanks to the above help we were able to get the distributor back together today, and the jeep runs better than it ever has for us. Thanks ever so much to everyone who posted. However, despite the new vacuum advance, we still have a problem with cold starting.

It has a manual choke which works. What makes it start is either starting fluid or a little gas poured down the carb. I have to keep squirting starting fluid till it warms up a bit and then it will run on its own. Once it is warm it starts fine as well.

It has a new fuel pump, new fuel lines, new fuel filter, and we rebuilt the carburetor. It was our first time doing that, so maybe we didn't get it right, but when the engine didn't run great we went through it a second time and I am quite confident the carb is clean. I am also pretty confident that the carb is getting fuel at least as far as the bowl, because right after it wouldn't start one time, i took the top of the carb off and the bowl was full of fuel.

So I am kind of out of ideas at this point. We sure could use a little input to point us in the right direction.

    Sounds like a stuck float?

Remove the carb and clean more thoroughly. I soak mine in a Harbor Freight Ultrasonic Cleaner.

A commonly missed area in the carb is the power valve screw. It looks like it needs a special tool to remove it, but you can use a flat head screw driver.

Take a look down the throat of the carb and work the throttle. You should see two strong squirts of fuel produced by the accelerator pump. This is very important. Now on the dist. I see in your pic of the dist that the fly weights have slotted holes where they mount on the pins. They should be a snug fit as seen in post number 11.
