Swapping out the carb on my V6 back to a Rochester. The fitting I have on the inlet is keeping the air cleaner from sitting down correctly. Seems like a steel line I could bend down quickly and have the clearance needed.

Question is: Is the flair on a large steel brake line correct (or adequate) for the connection? The threads match up and it seems very secure but I’m guessing that this is not a place for a leak!

    Thanks Scott B

If it's a flare nut fitting, it's the same as a brake line flare.

If you have the oil bath air cleaner there is a raised portion in the bottom of the cleaner housing that allows clearance over the fuel inlet of the carb.

I use brake lines to plumb my fuel system on my Jeep, they work on low pressure systems, like fuel lines, and you don't have to double flare the end you cut. You can take the top off your fuel pump and rotate it 180* and the intake will be on the rear of the fuel pump and the outlet will be on the front, that makes it a lot easier to plumb the gas line to the Carb. Good Luck.

Some of the fuel fittings have what is called an inverted flare. If you find that your carb fitting doesn't mate correctly with a brake line fitting, this may be the reason.

I thought brake fittings are inverted flare.

Not any more Pete, they have a "Bubble" in fittings now too, mostly on newer stuff.

I just re-plumbed the fuel feed to the 2G Rochester on my Dauntless using a new 5/16 stainless steel line with a 45-degree flare. The 45-degree flare matches the one on the original steel fuel line, the remaining end of which was still intact and on the carb. The original steel line had been cut at some point and connected to the fuel filter with a rubber line.

Rather than trying to flare the (very hard) stainless, I bought one of these and cut one end off, then used a tube bender to form it:

The general shape of the new line was based on these photos showing an original 1966 fuel line. This engine has a different coil placement than mine does, so I adapted the shape of the line I made for my motor to travel under and behind the coil.

Your carb looks just like mine. Except I have the large paper filter type air cleaner. I failed with the brake line the first time now because my bender would not make the bend soon enough from the end of the line. I’m going to find a different bender and try again. Ordered a aftermarket cleaner from Summit for now.

I know that in theory, but I've never owned a vehicle with bubbled lines.

The jeep the OP has surely uses 'old fashioned' 45º inverted flares on both brake lines and fuel lines. They should be identical in my experience.

I'll do that if I cant get the clearance I need with the proper fuel line bend.....and I haven't even tried to get the choke connected yet!

focker or someone was trying to 3D print that spacer...not sure if it held up to the fuel and vapor. There is a spec sheet for that spacer somewhere....
Try here....homersdog has some dimensions and wyomike has a diagram and pics...have to read into the 2nd page if posts...

It didn't hold up, my friend made it out of the thinner 3D material. He said he could do it over, but I told him not to worry about it.

I too am curious on the spacer. The parts and service manuals for the DJ-5A list a spacer on the Carter YF carb for the 153 engine. But I've never seen one anywhere and no dimensions are given.

Here are the dimensions of the original spacer, on some excellent drawings by Wyomike: V6 Air Cleaner Options

If an original spacer can't be found, it looks like this one from Speedway Motors (maybe the 2" tall version?) might work with some minor modification. One of the reviewers at the bottom of the page wrote "Worked on my 2-5/8" 2-barrel Rochester in my CJ5. Like a couple of other reviewers stated, I had to shave down the inside to get it to fit over my carb. I used a wire wheel and then sanded it smooth as I could. The fit is tight and it looks a nice product." :

I have one of those speedway spacers and as noted in the review, it needs to be opened up a bit to fit the carb, but is otherwise fine.
