So it looks like the 2 roughly 3/4" pipe plugs that are located on the front and back of my f head, just below the cam journals, are missing. The ones with 5/16 square drive heads that plug the oil passage at either end. Machine shop cant find them, so does anyone have a source?

That is ridiculous. Find another machine shop.

A good old fashioned FLAPS, or a plumbing wholesale supply should have them.

It would help to clarify if you mean 3/4" measurement, or nominal 3/4 thread size. And by "square drive," I am assuming you mean the hollow square on a "flush" type plug.

    Lisle even has magnetic ones.

They are also available with a hollow hex drive, which would work.

    This.
Pipe thread sizes have nothing to do with the physical diameter of the thread, I think a 3/4" pipe thread is over an inch in diameter.
If it measures 3/4" it's probably a 1/2" pipe thread.

Yes, after looking they are 3/8 NPT, shouldn't be hard to find after all. Much ado about nothing I guess. I actually have several with the square lug, I just need to get some with a square recess.

I let my crank for my F134 with thrust shims and tapered flywheel bolts go to the machine shop when i needed 2 journals welded 24 years ago. they lost both. At the time before internet the tapered bolts were close to unobtanium. I was really angry and teh machine shop told me to pound sand. I did find a set from a local supplier who gouged me and laughed in my face about it. i then bought shim stock that i cut into circles to set my thrust clearance on my engine I rebuilt in my living room.

Yep machine shops are the worst. I always remove all small parts before sending the parts to them.

Turns out I actually had some hex drive plugs in a coffee can that seem to work ok. Now can anyone tell me how a tappet (rearmost one) doesn't want to fit down the bore it came out of? Stem and bore look smooth, but the problem is definitely the bore cuz I tried other tappets and they also stop. The tappet fits down other bores just fine. How can a bore get smaller?

A ding on the edge of the bore opening? It wouldn't take much.

I think that might be it. I had new guides put in the block and the bore lines up right below one. Maybe the press or whatever tapped the bore opening. Starting to hate my machine shop

Yup. I've had a couple of engine jobs ruined by machine shop screw-ups. People you'd want to think of as experts.

Sadly "experts" seem to be few and far between anymore.

Dowel rod with some crocus cloth wrapped around it seemed to do the trick. Now on to the next problem! Should take about 6 minutes for it to appear.
