Keep in mind, you can buy A LOT of gas for the price of a OD from Herm and/or new gearing! Don't get me wrong, I have an OD that Herm rebuilt and LOVE it. Aside from the lower wear and tear on the engine and the slightly higher speeds you can attain, purchasing a OD or new gearing would probably offset any gains you will make in fuel economy for many years.

Still, you have to factor in the cool factor of having to explain to the masses that additional stick! Sometimes it's about more than the money! :)

I get gas every 100 miles or so wether I need it or not. I'm running 31's and figure if the odometer gets to 100 I actually went further. Trying to figure gas milage in a 5 is like fighting for peace, worthless.

I do like the idea of an overdrive. But when you live in Tucson. Your maximum speed limit is 45 miles an hour, and the only reason you would get on the highway would be to go to Phoenix. Two hours away, and in the other direction to visit friends in New Mexico. So the Jeep basically will never see highway speeds, although one more gear would be nice!

One more gear? The way I figure it, I have a 3-speed tranny with a high/low transfer case. That makes 6 forward gears and 2 reverse. Add an Overdrive and you effectively have 12 forward and 4 reverse gears! Of course my math or "gear" terminolgy may be wrong... but it impresses the heck out of people who ask me to explain the 4 shifters! :)

"Well, sir. What ya got here is direct drive, over there is high and low range, and this one here is high and higher range."

    Confuse you entirely, yet?

When I said, one more gear. I think most people knew what I meant
I would rather have a four speed transmission, rather than a three speed.

If you have a gas tank under the seat you can use a clean object, like a long wooden dowel to stab into the tank to check your fuel level. We do this at work to check the fuel level on the fork lift. We use a cut off piece of a clean broom handle.

the wooden rod gas gauge is exactly how I check my gas what model number is on your wooden gas gauge:) the problem is I forget to check my gas on a regular basis. I do have a regular gas gauge, but it just floats all over the place. Mostly telling me I have one half of a tank regardless of how much fuel is has. This is on my 1963, but I am not going to worry about it, because the 1955 is still in pieces, the transmission should be ready within the next few days. And I can begin to put it back together again. Then I can worry about the 1963 I don't want to mess with anything until the 1955 is up and running. Because these two jeeps are my only transportation

If you really want to confuse and bewilder people, add in a PTO lever and also the levers for cable operated lockers. (saw one of those last week) Of coarse now there isn't any room for a passenger.R)

My '94 Dakota Sport had a gas gauge like that. I took to setting the odometer to zero and stopping when I hit 250 miles whether it needed it or not.:hurrican: :coffee: :)

My 67 Willys CJ5 (T-90) gets around 17 litres/100kms - 16.6 MPG - running on LPG. The engine has been rebuilt and still hasn't ran more than 1k kms. So I assume she would consume just a little less with gasoline (maybe around 17-18) but it is still a huge fuel consumption compared with the other modern vehicles and even Jeeps.
This is combined (50% urban - 50%highway). I use my Jeep daily in urban areas where I have to get stuck in traffic with boring soulless hatchbacks and SUV's.
I live in Istanbul and the region where I drive -like the rest of Turkey- is geographically really mountainous. I don't remember myself ever driving in 3rd gear constantly for 50kms long. I don't know about you guys but my Hurricane really doesn't want to climb steep hills on the highway in 3rd gear, she claims to be driven in 2nd every time.
I don't exceed 60km/h - 35mph I think it is where she likes to dance.
    Tyres: 225/75R15
    On Highways:
    Hills: 40-50 km/h - 25-30 mph
    Flat: 60km/h - 37mph

You obviously don't drive your Willys like I plan to. I plan on driving it down to Death Valley CA should end up with wandering around about 2500-2800 mile trip. I also plan on driving to the Artic Circle in Canada a trip with wandering around on the way back of 5000 miles. The difference between 13 and 18 MPG is a LOT of money when some of the fuel will be $over $5.00 a gallon USD in parts of Canada Heck even CA is running well over $4.00 a gallon. I even have plans to drive to one of the Big Willys picnics in Ohio again a 4000 mile trip.

F134, 4.27 gears, 29" tires. Overdrive. Maybe 12MPG average. The problem is not the mileage. It's the 10 gallon fuel tank.

    Welcome Blondi.
Your milage sounds very normal to me, maybe even better than normal for an F-head.

About $500USD at the very most. Significant, yes. But probably a small fraction compared to the total costs, and the total rewards, of such a trip. I say enjoy.

I don't care about mileage on my Jeep, I just want to ride around in it for the fun of it, it is not an economy car. My snowmobile gets better mileage that my Jeep.

Hello everybody, I'm so happy to have joined in this forum after 26 years (It's me on the avatar, year 1994, a year old) This place is full of beautiful people and it really helped me a lot during the process of rebuilding my Willys. I spent tons of hours reading the treads here even in bed before I went asleep. (I guess we all know what it feels like.)
I'm planning on sharing the whole rebuild/restoration process of my Jeep with this amazing community soon, there are tons of photos so gotta be patient.

The gas mileage topic is actually important for me because my Jeep is my only vehicle with four wheels and I drive her daily in the city. I know that it is a mistake to have high expectations from a Hurricane when it comes to fuel consumption but I still have to consider it like CHUGALUG mentioned. I also plan to hit the road, probably to Greece or southern coast of Turkey (1500-2000kms one way)

My solution was to convert my Jeep to LPG (aka Propane) and I have to tell you it was the best application I ever did for her (except the retro cast-iron bottle opener on dash and the wooden block which goes under the gas pedal to support my heel) It's a 60lt tank behind the front bench seat. I didn't eliminate the gasoline tank and the gasoline system so I can switch to unleaded 95 whenever I want. This also allows me to have two separate fuel tanks (Original gas tank under my a** and the LPG tank) so the range increases dramatically.
    Little math below:
    40litres/10,5 gallons gasoline + 60litres /16 gallons LPG

-My MPG is 18 MPG or 15lt/100kms on gasoline + 16.6MPG or 17lt/100kms on LPG
    so;
A full gas tank allows me to drive for: approx 350kms/217miles
A full LPG tank allows me to drive for approx 350km / 217 miles
    =
My range is approx 700kms/435 miles

LPG is life, I'm telling you...

Petral since I will be taking the longer trips in a couple years once I have retired to save $500 on one trip will mean I have that much more to spend on another. You know limited income in retirement and all that kind of thing.

I am working very hard towards the goal of 18mpg solo and 15mpg towing my 1200lb trailer.
