As a relatively new owner of a 75 CJ5 I continue to be amazed how many parts from later Jeeps won't work. Can anybody weigh in, at least in general, about parts etc from earlier and later that are usable for the Intermediates? Most of the major on-line sellers don't even list parts for CJs prior to 76.

In short - when it comes to the engine its AMC which will match better with the 76 and later stuff. When it comes to other parts and pieces such the early stuff may be a better match. Tim will probably be the best around here with part numbers etc for intermediates. It may be easier to look for parts for the specific item you are trying to find - such as a T14 transmission or a D20 transfer case as opposed to looking for parts based on application (year make model etc). Post up on here and we'll do our best to help you out.

Everything changes for 1976, other than the front clip (hood, fenders), front axle, transfer case and engine. Complete redesign for 1976. There are a few other things that carry over, but don't assume anything for '76 or later works on a '75.

The intermediates were a stopgap between the original CJ-5 designed during the Korean war, and the complete redesign by AMC for 1976. the engine compartment was stretched to accommodate the excellent AMC inline sixes, and some major components like brakes, steering, front axle and transfer case were modernized. Most everything from a '72 through '75 will fit a '75.

Generally these Jeeps are poorly supported in the aftermarket, for both original parts and accessories. Always assume that the aftermarket parts suppliers are less well informed than you are. There are plentiful mistakes in the parts store listings. Your best reference is the factory service manual and parts book. The service manual TSM is available on CD-ROM, and the '74-80 parts book can be purchased in hard copy for about $100 ... might available on CD-ROM now.

Wow ... that's really cheap for the parts book ... anyone owning or with an interest in these Jeeps should buy the parts book now on CD-ROM, while they are being offered. Owners of '72 and '73 CJs would also benefit, since these years are the same as '74 except for a few specific and minor differences.

You can ask about specific parts issues here ... we'll be happy to help.

Not the '75 TSM. '74 and '76 but no '75. You want the '75 TSM since it's the only year with a fuse panel and the old style column. Wiring for '75 is more like '76 but the GM column is different.

The '74-76 parts book on the oljeep site only has the listings, no illustrations. The '74-80 book has hearly as many pages of illustrations as listings.

Under $50 for both from RockAuto. Cheap.
