I have a 1969 CJ5 with a 225 V6. It has a limited slip unit in the Spicer-Dana 44 rear end. Gear ratio is 4.88. Can anyone help me with the real name of the limited slip and or the part number for the clutch pack? Thanks. WestCoastPat

Probably a Trac Loc but we'd really need a pic to be sure, after that long really anything could be in there.

Flanged axle should be a Dana-Spicer TracLock. Tapered (nutted) axle should be a Dana-Spicer PowrLock. If factory equipped. Unlikely a '69 has a flanged axle, but possible.

Again, should be if factory equipment, not aftermarket. Pull the cover and take a picture.

I guess I should have mentioned that it was in the JEEP back in 1969 when I bought it new. Last night I looked at a lot of stuff on the computer about replacing the friction discs. And one of the things I found explained how to test if it was working good or needed service. I don't know where I found the info, but it was basically putting a torque wrench on one wheel with the other one blocked and on the ground. I wish I remembered what the procedure and expected reading was. Anybody know about the test?

FWIW there should be a tag held down with a differential cover bolt that says power-lok if the Jeep came with it.

My manual is new from '69, for Jeeps through '69 (wish I had kept mine). The torque is a minimum of 40lbs should be required to continuously turn the wheel smoothly, disregarding the torque it takes to get it started turning. You put the wrench on the axle shaft nut. The manual says this test only applies to power loks with dished plates though, so to do it you need to determine what kind of plates are in it apparently.

The other kind of test says to tighten the brake shoes on the raised wheel until you can barely turn it by grasping the tire. Use a roller type floor jack and don't block the wheel that's on the floor. Start the engine, put in low gear and carefully engage the clutch, vehicle should roll forward if the power-lok is operating correctly. Obviously you wouldn't need to roll far. This test can be done for either kind of power-lok that would be in there.

That's a bit more risky test!

A quick and dirty test to check a limited slip rear is to jack up one wheel off the ground, and the opposite wheel on the ground and chocked (and the brakes off/in neutral). Grab the raised wheel by the tire and try to rotate it. If it turns with only a little-to-moderate resistance, the clutches are shot. If you can muscle it around with a lot of resistance, the clutches are working.

The manual says that is only for dished plates however.

I'll have to try my way on a Trac-Lok thats known good. The Trac-Lok that I pulled to swap with a fresh PowrLok was essentially an open diff, and it was really worn! That fresh PowrLok was so tight, I couldn't budge the raised tire, but it had never been run.

IIRC, the Trac-loc wasn't available until the Intermediates in 72. You very likely have a PowerLoc. Good for you; they are a great unit.

My Dads early 70 J3000 had a posi unit in one of the axles as I remember him getting home from a hunting trip that had a lot of downhill on ice and snow covered roads and taking it to the dealer to have it taken out. It almost drove him off the edge of the road a number of times he said.

My 71 had a Trac Lock. I blew it up and rebuilt it twice. I got rid of it the 3rd time it broke and replaced it with a Detroit.

Yep, there are times you might not necessarily want to go straight.
