After An Afternoon Of Maintenance

    Hi guys,
    So today went an did a whole lot of stuff to the cj5.
    Changed oil, oil filter, air (oil bath) filter, transfer case oil, trans oil, both diffs oil, used a grease gun and greased both driveshafts, pedal assembly, transfer case shifters.
    Also removed rear leaf springs and greased the bushings (might need to change them in the future)
    Gave it a health check while I was at it and noticed a couple of things.
    First:
    I have a bit of up-down play on the driver's side front wheel, seems like the whole assembly is pivoting up and down, possibly wear on the spindle's up and/or down bearings ? (Haven't taken it apart to know how it actually works, it's a dana 44 front).
    Second:
    While in the air didn't notice much (almost nothing) of play in the rear wheels, however once in the ground I shook the jeep violently (using the rollbar) and heard a noticeable "clunk" that seems to come from the rear wheel (both do the same noise, the driver's side seems a tad noisier).
    What could this be? wear on the bearings? incorrect shims? (Again, don't know how this works inside, yet... dana 44 rear with tapered axleshafts)

    Does your Jeep have an open knuckle or closed knuckle front axle?
    Open knuckle, you need to look at the ball joints. Closed knuckle has bearings instead of ball joints, they could be your problem also.
    It could also be wheel bearings. It would help to have an assistant wiggle the wheel while you look underneath & see where the movement is.

    Closed knuckle.
    I’ll have to disassemble i guess lol

    Welcome from Michigan, USA. You sure you have a Dana 44 in the front? My 64 has a Dana 27 up front. Just asking.

    So I took everything apart today... didn't notice any axle in/out play :(
    I'm gonna change the bearings anyway, I hope the end play is correct after everything since I don't have more shims (I can remove the ones I have only :rofl:)

    Make shims if you have to.. time consuming but I have used all sorts of things to make shims, coffee can lids, old body panels etc.. Just after cutting you must spend a lot of time honing edges to ensure there are no burrs and such.

    That's a good day of jeep wrenchin.

    If the whole wheel clicks up and down, you likely have to check the hub or the knuckle for play in ether.

    How long have you had it?
