In watching various jeep videos, I'm noticing a number of Jerry cans mounted directly on the tailgate of the civilian 2a up to 5 and the tailgates don't appear to be permanently closed. Other than a backing plate and the Jerry can holders, is there a reason not to mount directly to the tailgate? Originally, I was thinking of getting some square tubing and welding a bolt on bottom end so the weight could rest on the drawbar and be bolted down then coming up to a plate for attaching the can holder and upper attachment just like the tailgate chain plate so the chain holds the tailgate and top of gas can bar. But attaching to the tailgate seems easier.

If you use the tailgate much you won't like having something on it or in the way of opening the tailgate.

It's a lot of weight and fatigue will take its toll on the tailgate if unsupported.

Yes, this is not the job of the tailgate. As for the spare tyre, it is better to fix something to support weight and let the tailgate in use. That is probably why the army Jeep had no tailgate. Or other locations for cans.

This pretty much describes my spare tire carrier, it works very well. No reason it wouldn't work for a gas can also.
BUT, I don't have a can on the back, I shudder at the thought of having 5 gallons of gasoline strapped on the back in the event of an accident!

    Any pic would be appreciated

My thoughts are the can only when going off on trails. When on regular roads, pull it off. I don't want some idiot not paying attention to screw up and me pay the price.

Tire Carrier.jpg Here is how it came out. I now have a hardtop on and the tire and rear door interfere with each other. There are tabs on either side of the original tailgate latches with a pin thru. I will take picture and post later. It has worked out ok as all the weight is carried down to the frame. Only accel and decel loads on the tailgate latches.

Wow Greevesman, that is a virtual duplicate of mine! I guess great minds think alike ;)

Edit: I like your pivot mount better, mine has to be unbolted to remove.

The common way of mounting a jerry can carrier to the tailgare was by using an M38 tailgate. They were heavier, and had backup brackets on the inside.
You are better off makng a bracket that mounts to the rear crossmember.

Mine carries the load to the rear crossmember. Top is only fore and aft loading

Remember when using an M38 tailgate for gas and/or tire mounting that the body on the M38 is also reinforced. It has reinforcements that correspond to where the chain/bolt loops are on the body. I can easily see where an M38 tailgate with tire and/or gas can mounted for an extended period could pull on the CJ5 body in an adverse way. One or the other you might be ok but both on there is a lot of extra weight on the CJ5 body.

Is mounting it inside at the very back an option?

Sure, but it takes up floor space.

Here is a m38 tailgate with tire and fuel carriers....don't think this exact tailgate works for cj5 or a1 but gives an idea of what you can do. I like this set up if you don't use your tailgate much. Scott had something similar on his a1 on the Rubicon with 5 gal can and 33x12.5 tire...very solid. I use my tailgate a lot so went with the bumper/swing away carrier for both tire and can.
