Maybe a zinc supplement (ZDDP) would be prudent? Just a guess.

Sucks about the oil leak, I'd be a bit upset about that. Getting oil pressure apparently without a hassle was certainly good news though.

What else would he say? Not likely to offer a free re-assembly.

But in real life, I'll bet many thousands of engines have been just fine without any special start-up procedure.

I don't see what the concern would be. It's a bypass oil filter so the oil spewing out from the filter wasn't headed to the bearings; it was just going back to the sump. If you got it running and showing oil pressure I would think you got good oil to the bearings.

Exactly where from the canister? Out from under the lid? you had 40 psi, the assembly lube is gone anyhow. You'll be fine.

    Yes.
Just spoke with the guy, he feels it will all be just fine...so I feel a heck of a lot better.
We figure either the oil line out of the filter is clogged ( seems unlikely but easy to check ) or the rubber washer I had under the steel washer and bolt to hold the lid on had enough squish to let the lid move up a little...he recommended an aluminum washer with some Permatex #2

That wouldn't cause the canister to leak, it would just block any flow.

I've had leaks around the rim before- simply a case that the gasket wasn't quite positioned correctly.

The gaskets for the lids nowadays are generally worthless. Most likely you'll need to get some good gasket material and carefully cut one to fit.

Repair lid leak, start it and run it.
