Sooo.... in removing my windshield to get some parts powder-coated I managed to crack the windshield glass.

I called Safelite and fell out of my chair when I was quoted $440!!!!

I found the glass on Quadratec for $139 or OC Auto Carpets for $85. (I think mine has the green tint)

Fairchild Industries Replacement Windshield Glass for 68-75 CJ-5, CJ-6

1968-1975 Jeep CJ5 WINDSHIELD, GREEN TINT | Online Store | Car & Truck Interior Carpet

Any downside to the $85 glass????

Is the weatherstrip seal two piece or one piece or is the seal the same but the first one does not include the locking strip?:

Crown Automotive J0978995 Windshield Weatherstrip for 49-75 Jeep Vehicles

1959-1975 Jeep CJ5 WEATHERSTRIP AND LOCKING STRI | Online Store | Car & Truck Interior Carpet

How hard is it to remove / replace the glass? I will be doing it with the windshield lying on a table. Seems like the 'rope trick' is the best installation method.

Easiest to just cut out the old gasket with a utility knife? Really no clue on the process.... my only experience with windshield replacement is what I have seen on the car restoration TV shows and a few YouTube videos!!!!!

    Thanks for the help!!!

There’s an article from the 90s that goes through a windshield replacement. I’ll go see if I can find it(y)

For a half-windshield I paid 130 euros it was securit glass and 2 corners were round/curb this increase the price. Windshield in 2 parts for export tropicalised or something like that.
It was some years ago still perfect.

    A lot of questions....

As to "cheap" glass... I went that way (cheap ebay part) with my YJ last year.

    a) It was a very difficult install because the glass was "tight" in the opening.
    b) It has started to 'fog' in one spot near the bottom edge.
    c) I can't tell you if these things had anything to do with the purchase price.
    d) Next time I will pay to have it installed, that way at least I'll have someone else to blame.

I went with a custom auto glass shop here in Spokane WA.
I took them the replacement weatherstrip that I bought from Walcks, the old glass and my newly painted frame.
They installed new glass (green tint) for $120.

like wise here. Had a new glass installed by a local glass shop (State Auto Glass).Just in case someone local needs there service. The new glass was a very tight fit but they got it done. They said not to bother with seal next time as they have it in bulk. This was on the 1969. Under $150. Going to do the w/s on the Renegade this winter.Clean and paint frame (black) replace rubber seals and new glass.mike

I found a local glass installer who will do the installation for $125. I'm thinking I go with the more expensive glass and just get it installed.

If you are using the lock strip type rubber you will definitely want to get the little tool for installing the lock strip. I fought mine for a couple hours, Steve's71 came over with a beer..... saw what I was doing and said he'd be right back. He returned with his tool and had the lock strip installed before I could find where he sat that beer down.....

Does the new rubber get installed with the locking seal side of the seal on the outside (hood side) or facing the interior of the Jeep? I can’t tell from pics on line.

outside!...not sure how sound the theory is but...if the windshield is struck (deer) and the lockstrip is inside theres a better chance of it all in your face.

Huh I think I installed mine wrong then. I just installed the new glass with the same orientation as the old one without much thought. Now that I think about it the 74 I picked up has the lock strip on the outside. Oops.

I found some pictures online finally that I could enlarge enough to see how the seal was installed. The locking strip side definitely goes towards the outside. I find it strange, because if you want to hold the glass in place while someone pulls it over the lip of the frame from the inside, you’re pulling the beefier side of the seal over the frame lip. The side of the seal with the locking strip seems more pliable and easier to put over the lip. In the grand scheme of things, I wonder if it even matters.
