I installed the RR YJ conversion a year and a half ago or so. Since I have been having problems keeping the lower shock mount bolts from braking. Broke 3 this weekend, and ruined at least one shock.. Whadda ya got?

No experience with this conversion, but usually that means the shock is bottoming before the axle hits the frame bumper. Did you measure the collapsed length of the shock and compare to the pin distance minus the travel?

I thought I had it sorted before. Looked at it but never measured. Just got home. Later wrench session to ensue. Will check. I have had issues with the bolts unscrewing. So I added an allen head set screw..

I have this RR YJ on my 5 also. Have not broken a bolt but I did have a rear lower bolt very loose today. Maybe 1.5” out and maybe less than an inch left in the mount. Glad I saw it when cleaning mud from yesterday’s trail ride.

I lifted the corners one at a time and measured all the shock lengths. Took the max and minimum for buying shocks.

Mine did that and wouldn't stay put. Lost 3-4. Safety wired em. They still fell out, but didn't get lost usually. Then they started breaking and falling out. I drilled the shock bolt hole and added an allen head set screw. Now they just beak. Did a rough measurement of the front. Seems my shocks are borderline for length.. Gonna do some diligent measuring later in the week. If I can't cure it I am going to find some Jeep style spring plates with the shock stud welded on and try that.

I can't think of another reason the shock mount would break unless the shock is bottoming out as Tim stated. You're going to need a shock with a longer stroke or you're going to have to make stops to limit upward travel, or keep breaking mounts..

I am working on that. As I said, my rough measurements show the shocks border line. Precise measuring to come.

I had an issue with putting the front shocks on the rear. I could feel the shorter shock bottoming out.
I also had one come loose. Haven't had a problem since.

On the rear, if your shocks are the same as Steve's 71, they are too long...... His kit came with the same shock/ length all the way around. On the Rubicon he broke one lower mount off of the rear spring plate and a lower bolt on the other rear......

Measured some stuff today. Going to NAPA tomorrow to source some shocks. I also noticed at almost full compression that my bump stop is barely missing the extension I added. Gonne fix that and a few other things.
