I have a stock roll bar from a later CJ5 with the tube that is parallel to the early windshield and springs under the tub. I would like to upgrade from lap belts to lap and shoulder. Is there anything I need to know and consider or do I just put that top strap wherever it looks good with a roll bar clamp? Pics of existing shoulder belts would be very helpful. Thank you!

One down fall. They tend to lock you against the seat. Once there it won't let you go. The only way to get released is to unlatch the belt.
You can keep this from happening again, just lean forward while you drive.

I put phancy race-car harnesses in my old CJ5. They were such a pain to put on and off that I rarely used them. Couldn't reach the glovebox with them on. My CJ6 I used TJ retractables and was much happier. You'd have to modify the rollbar to add the mount points, etc though.

Good point I know passenger belts will do this. I thought it was for use with a car seat.

Good suggestion! I saw racing harnesses were a pain, I will look into the TJ belts maybe Cessna belts as well. Biggest concern is keeping my ribs out of the steering column and head away from the glass.

I took mine out of my TJ rear. Any thoughts as to whether they should be adaptable using the roll bar as the retract mount? I know the center harness half will have to be modified.

'Course I'm too lazy to wander out and look, but don't the TJ rear belts have the retractor mounted on the rollcage? I used TJ rear belts in the rear of my 6, and the retractors mounted to the cage.

Thanks, I just couldn't tell if you used front belts or rear. So then all needed is to split the center section and mount each side separately? Sounds like an easy job.

I used a full front and rear set. The fronts were nice as I was able to use the height-adustment even.

I believe you have me confused with someone else...;) I sold my CJ5 ~15 years ago, sold my CJ6 ~10 years ago, and just have the TJ now.

Just checked the ones out of my TJ rear. The retractor on the TJ mounted on the wheel well and let belt come up from below. They don't work upside down on my roll bar. Time to look for different types. Thanks

Aftermarket three point belts, the retractor is mounted in the stock location by the seat.

Mounting point welded to the rollbar.

My set up is similar to what has already been posted. Upper mount is made from a piece of round stock that has been tapped. Then roll bar drilled and welded in place. The lower mount for the retractor is a flat piece of steel welded to the roll bar. Keep in mind that I have a full cage and the lower mount is welded to a horizontal bar.
