I have a '70 CJ5 that came with a 4bbl Edlebrock Performer carb (on a Dauntless V6). I have a '76 CJ5 that came with a Carter AFB on its Chevy 350. They're both essentially the same carburetor and they're lousy off-road. I've tried all the tricks, such as, adjusting the float height, using the off-road seat springs, and plugging the passage between the two bowls. The tricks help, but even going up a moderately steep trail, the engine will cough and die (I think from raw fuel pouring into the engine). ITLKSEZ suggested trying an Autolite 2100, which he has on his dump truck. I ordered the last 2100 from RockAuto.

I also had to buy a 4bbl to 2bbl adapter so the carb would fit on 4bbl manifold.

I took off the Edlebrock 4bbl carb and installed the 2100 on the engine. I had to fab a bracket (the tall black bracket in the foreground) to mount a spring for the throttle return. I had to make a new fuel hard line from the fuel pump to the fuel filter.

The new carb didn't come with an air cleaner bolt. The air cleaner requires a smaller bolt diameter than the bolt that secures the top of the carb. I made my own bolt, following ITLKSEZ's plans.

The new carb works great. The engine starts right up and after testing the jeep on the steep back yard, seems to work at any angle.

I searched the internet for a vacuum port fitting for the carb. I couldn't find one. I tried O'Reillys in Redmond and they didn't have anything either. I found a fuel inlet fitting and bought an aluminum tube at a hobby shop. I cut and bent a piece of tube and JB welded it in place. A rubber tube connects the vacuum inlet to the distributor.

I'll update this post when I have more miles on the jeep. I'll also update this when I replace the AFB on the '76 jeep with an inexpensive 2150 clone off of Amazon.

I have the same setup and problem. Wonder if I can afford to do it. No more at Rockauto?

Kill those carter/edelbrock carbs with hammers.
I had one on my blazer. Took a quadrajet carb I got a yard sale for 5 bucks off a 305. Didn't rebuild it or anything, just slapped it on my junk 350.

That junk carb was worlds better than the "performance" carb...

Any suggestions on a 2 barrel carburetor that can be adapted to an Offy Dual Port? I think around 400 cfm is about what I need on the dauntless.

I pointed him towards the direct replacement for the one on my truck because it’s so dirt simple (one vacuum port) and it has manual choke and provisions for a hand throttle. That was the last of that particular model, but there are plenty of other 2100/2150s for different models with different features. They run around $300 without a core exchange.

The one he got from amazon was under $100 and is all new. We’ll see how it works...

think its basically any 2 barrel carb will go on the Offy with the adapter shown above....FWIW I really like the Rochester 2g carb. I know its the OEM equipment, but that doesn't necessarily make it bad. With all the wheeling i do in Moab and here in Colo, and on the Rubicon this summer, it never had any issues even when at pretty substantial odd and off camber angles. That doesn't make the other carbs the wrong choice, but if you are looking for a simple 2barrel I would definitely consider it.

I had a carter afb and a few edelbog’s. I hate them. I’ll stick with the holley, Rochester, or Autolite/motorcraft carbs.

The title, "I'd rather switch than fight" was supposed to be a play on the old cigarette ads, "I'd rather fight than switch", where they'd show usually show a girl with a black eye. I see my original title has been tweaked to be more informational. I guess I was trying to be too clever. :study: Yes, I'd rather switch carbs than fight my old one.

The AFB/Edelbrock carb is a very good unit when set up properly...AFB's were factory installed on some of the greatest muscle cars of the 60's. However, the float design just does not work well off road. There are two very large float bowls with the float hinged at the rear, it just doesn't work well on any sort of angle. Center pivot Holleys (like a double pumper) suffer from the same problem.

I owned a 70 with dauntless several years ago with the OEM Rock 2G. It was excellent for the 225. I wish I was set up with that now. I didn't join this thread to debate carter/Rock/ Holley, etc. I merely was interested in adapting this POS Offy/Edel 1406 down to less flow. Sorry to have interrupted.

One of those adapters would work on a Offy dual port...but not well. I'm sure it will run but that manifold has 4 individual ports one for each carb throat and that adapter places the 2 bbl carb right in the middle of them. The flow will be lousy.

You're the best, colo jeep guy. You see the issue I face. Any thoughts how I can get down to 400 cfm or less without many $$? 600 cfm always runs rich.

    Either find a Holley 390
Holley 0-8007 390 CFM Classic Holley Carburetor

or a stock Rochester 2G carb and intake.
600 cfm is WAY too big for a 225.

I admit running a 2V carb on a Dual Port Offy is defeating the purpose of the intake. I run one on mine with an adapter that looks like the one in the pic(Mr Gasket brand) without issues. The adapter places the 2v carb over the center and with the open style of the plenum on the adapter it seams to work good for me. It's a 1.08 venturi model and I believe I have size 50 jets in it but not sure. I've been all over MN with it trail and road.

And again, here we are. Just confusion and differing opinions. I guess I'll have to pour $$ on it to get it back to the way it was OEM (intake and carb) and eliminate this debate. But, I have learned a lot. Thanks
