I have recently acquired a 1970 CJ5 with a V6 and T18 transmission. The case is stamped T181B and I do believe it originally came with a T90. Reverse is right and up. I took the floor cover off and found a bolt in the reverse light switch hole. I bought a switch but discovered there is nothing in the hole to push the end of the switch. I put a small diameter piece of metal in the hole and shifted to reverse and found nothing makes contact until about 2 inches into the case. The switch I bought is only about 3/4” in from the threads to tip.

Does anyone know what kind of switch I need? Thanks for any help.

Yes that looks like where my switch is but I need to see the threaded portion. The switch I received has a thread length of 7/16” and is way too short to make contact with anything.

Thanks for the replies. I read through the thread Focker and it seems most of that is for a T90. According to Novak, my tranny is from a Jeep but an earlier T18 (pre 78) I believe because of reverse and because it has T98 stamped on the top cover. It almost seems like there should be a rod in there to make contact with the switch. I measured last night and when in reverse there is a space of about 1 13/16” between the reverse rod and the switch.

My Tremec T-18 book shows the reverse switch on the side of the rail for both the earlier up-by-third style T-18 shift top, and the later style down-by-fourth top.

The Jeep parts book shows the end-mounted switch as above:

It also shows a plug in the side of the shift top (6.018-8) where the Ford style (?) backup switch goes, as in the Tremec book. As you see there are four parts, an adapter (3.319-4), plunger (-5), spring (-6) and retainer (-7), in addition to the switch (-2). There are Jeep PNs, but they won't help you since you won't find them unless you buy another shift top or a complete transmission.

Maybe someone has one of these transmissions on the shop floor and can loan you the parts to be duplicated. A machinist friend could whip them up easy, I predict.

That is awesome and exactly what I needed! Thank you! I will see if I can “whip” something up at home now that I know what is supposed to be in there. I took some measurements last night. Thanks again guys.
