So I got Willie flat towed up to the mountain cabin. He was stumbling on acceleration back in Texas, especially when under slight load. Once here, he started right up but was still stumbling going up hills, etc., so I pulled the carb and found a fair amount of garbage at the bottom of the bowl. Found more crap as I pulled it apart and use carb cleaner to flush out all passages. When I had the motor out, I did replaced all the fuel lines, etc., with Walcks pieces. There was no place for a fuel filter. The PO had cut the line under the fuel tank and spliced in a filter there. I didn't like that spot since it as under the tub and subject to possible snagging on stuff. After finding the crap in the carb, I did add the small conical screen filter that is included the extra hardware rebuild kit from Mikes's carburetor that goes under the fuel needle seat. That should help, but if stuff builds up there, that would be a pain to take top off to clean.

So my question is, have y'all added, and if so, where, an inline filter? I'm surprised the factory didn't have one back in the day. I recall the Pontiac Rochester Quadrajets of my youth had the brass filters right at the inlet to the carb. I asked Mike and his suggestion was cut the line going to the carb and install there. I was thinking about putting it between the hard line and the that vibration line on the fuel pump.

I am using same as Pete, in-line right at the fuel pump inside driver fender. It’s nice to be able to see the filter and fuel flowing and the filters are replaceable while the housing is retained.

I have the flex line from Walcks so can either of you send me a pic you your installation. Trying to get a visual before cut my line. Currently I have the non-glass bowl dual action pump nstalled but do have a NOS glass bowl waiting to change out gaskets (assuming after this long they need it). Just how well does the glass bowl filter?

Make sure the filter is higher than the tank at all angles of the jeep in which you can change a filter. I also like it after the pump yes the pump can clog but it can also release debris. Don't put it over any exhaust or electrical components. I've had a few bad experiences with filters.

Edit: I found a pic of the above filter on my ol' F-head

If you have the V6 engine there is also a type of filter where the fuel line connects to the carb. Here is a pic of my inline fuel filter and the pic of the carb where there is also a filter.

Is there a reason for this other than gas running out once you loosen it up?

Gas running out when your not there.
One night I Lost a whole tank of fuel when the flexy hose connected to the filter gave way to the ethanol. I had tractors stall out on hills as the rust on the top and sides of the tank gets washed loose. Also keeps the outside of the filter cleaner which helps you keep the inside of the filter clean. When you change the media you will want to easily get to the glass case the two rubber washers the media and the threaded rod that holds it all together.

Need to be careful with this type. I had one on my Case 446. Internal screen came loose (unthreaded). Tractor started running rough. Ended up rebuilding the carb and was considering a new one before I found the problem.

Back in the '70s, many would run a sediment bowl filter when traveling to Mexico. The Pemex gas was often contaminated with dirt and water, and the sediment bowl would show whatever was trapped by the filter, and the bowl can be drained and removed for cleaning without replacing the element.

    Glass Bowl Fuel Filter

Look like they are also an item used on tractors a lot, so ... Tractor Supply?

So you are getting a bunch of dirt in the float bowl, even with new lines. I would suggest that you remove your gas tank and clean it, and maybe coat it or even replace it. Removing the tank from an early CJ is really easy ...

As I mentally go thru placement, the only place I can see as above the gas tank would be cutting the line where it goes up the side of the block and turns into the carb like jw60's pic.

    Glass Bowl Fuel Filter

One caution with these is that any water trapped can freeze in the winter, possibly cracking the bowl.

As for placing the filter above the tank, another option is a simple shut-off valve in the line. M38A1 Jeep had that as OEM.
